The work examines Pîrî Reis's life and oeuvre, Ottoman-Turkish naval supremacy in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, and his major geographical writings including the Bahriye (Aegean and Mediterranean Pilot). It presents detailed analyses of his 1513 world map, the first to depict America, and the 1528 world map showing North America, compares his maps with contemporaneous cartographic works, and includes a catalogue of manuscript copies of the Bahriye, accompanied by a bibliography.

The work is divided into two principal sections: the first examines the formative period of the Ottoman Empire, Ottoman maritime and continental dominance in the sixteenth century, and the discovery of the New World; the second focuses on Pîrî Reis's life and works, including his biography, the Kitab-? Bahriye in its two recensions, the 1513 world map depicting America, the 1528 world map, and a comparative study of his maps alongside other early sixteenth-century cartographic works. The volume concludes with the author's lectures on Pîrî Reis delivered in Geneva and Ankara (1937), contemporary press notices, a catalogue of Bahriye manuscripts, and a comprehensive bibliography.
