Even helder geschreven en rijk geïllustreerd als zijn voorgangers, voert dit deel de lezer naar de negentiende eeuw, de eeuw v…an de 'come back' van Amsterdam. Amsterdam kreeg tijdens de Franse bezetting (1810-1813) de titel van 'derde hoofdstad' van het Keizerrijk, na Parijs en Rome. Bij het herstel van de nationale onafhankelijkheid, in 1813, werd de stad van die ongevraagde eer ontheven. Deze verandering symboliseert de teloorgang van de stad. Amsterdam was nog wel belangwekkend, maar niet belangrijk meer. In de eerste decennia van de negentiende eeuw klonken steeds luider de klachten dat Amsterdam een 'dode stad' dreigde te worden. Maar even na het midden van de eeuw ging de stad in wonderbaarlijk snel tempo groeien: het Noordzeekanaal (1876) werd het symbool van een nieuw leven. Aan het einde van de negentiende eeuw vestigde zich de overtuiging dat alle belangwekkende veranderingen in Nederland zich bij uitstek in Amsterdam voltrokken. Finally, the last section attests to its resilience after the Second World War, demonstrating the strength of the ideal of parliament and its power to incorporate criticism. Examining the history of parliament through concepts and ideals, this book traces a transnational, European exchange of models, routines and discourse.
