Carte-de-visites. Im Unterrand und rückseitig Eindruck des Photographen, zusätzlich recto/verso Stempel sowie handschriftliche Bildlegende und Motivnummer. Eine Aufnahme minimal geblichen (Erfurt), beide Abzüge hinten mit Spuren von alter Montierung (Kleber) und etwas Papierabrieb, sonst aber gut, vorne sehr schön erhalten. Der bedeutende elsässische Photograph war zuerst Textildesigner, wechselte aber 1847 zur Photographie. Auf der Pariser Weltausstellung von 1855 präsentierte er Blumenstilleben, die ihm zum Durchbruch verhalfen. Ab den 1860er-Jahren lag sein Hauptinteresse auf topographischen und architektonischen Ansichten, die seine Mitarbeiter in vielen europäischen Ländern aufnahmen und die er in vielen Formaten, auch als Stereoskopien vertrieb. Später widmete er sich der Reproduktion von Kunstwerken, photographierte bei der Eröffnung des Suezkanals, beim Bau der Gotthard-Bahn und dokumentierte die Zerstörungen im Deutsch-Französischen Krieg etc. 1885 wurde er offizieller Photograph des Louvre.
