The Dover Patrol was a Royal Navy command of the First World War, notable for its involvement in the Zeebrugge Raid on 22 April 1918, it formed a discrete unit of the Royal Navy based at Dover and Dunkirk for the duration of the First World War. Its primary task was to prevent enemy German shipping, chiefly submarines, from entering the English Channel en route to the Atlantic Ocean, thereby obliging the German Navy to travel via the much longer route around Scotland which was itself covered by the Northern Patrol. Admiral Reginald Bacon (1863-1947) commanded the Dover Patrol from 1915 to 1917, overseeing the naval force responsible for defending the English Channel during the First World War. These volumes offer a detailed contemporary account of British naval operations in the Channel, including patrol work, minesweeping, coastal bombardment, and preparations for the Zeebrugge and Ostend operations. After his naval service, Bacon wrote extensively on naval history, including The Dover Patrol 1915-1917, The Life of Lord Fisher of Kilverstone, and The Jutland Scandal.
