Addison was an eminent and highly regarded doctor, specifically an anatomist, and was initially a Liberal MP and a junior mnister in various Lloyd George governments. He later joned the Labour party and was a minister under both Ramsay MacDonald and Clem Attlee, subsequently becoming a peer and serving as Leader of the House of Lords under Attlee. He was brought up on a family farm in Lincolnshire and was Minster of Agriculture from 1930 to 1931 under MacDonald.
