Docketed '(Edna Lyall)' in pencil beneath signature. Image on application.

A postscript discusses 'the birthdays of Rob's two girls', and states that she is sending 'some impressions from my father's little seal with the cross & anchor which you told me once you would like to see'.

An early edition, the fifteenth and sixteenth thousandth, published in the same year as the first edition.'The Autobiography of a Slander' follows the trials of a Polish emigre, Sigismund Zaluski, as he explores London, and finds himself accused of being an anti-Russian nihilist.By Ada Ellen Bayly, under the pseudonym Edna Lyall, a prolific author and support of woman's suffrage. In the original publisher's paper wraps. Externally, smart. Some light marks and discolouration to the wraps. A small amount of loss to the backstrip. Front wrap is lifting to the tail. Spine is a little discoloured. Internally, generally firmly bound. Pages are bright with only a few spots. Very Good. book.

Scarce Edwardian novel. In near Fine condition - Green decorated cloth with gilt titles to spine.

Half titles. Original pink-red vertical fine-ribbed cloth, spines lettered in gilt; spines sl. faded & marked. Discreet small ownership stamps on half title of Pearse, Warrington. Not in Sadleir; see Wolff 4218 for the first edition, the same year, with the same collation but without the publisher's Catalogue in vol. III. This second edition not on Copac. Lyall, 1857-1903, remained unmarried and supported the women's suffrage movement from an early age. To Right the Wrong is an historical novel about John Hampden & the Civil War.

She apologies that 'the crowd of Christmas engagements' has meant that his letter has gone unanswered until now. 'With regard to the question you ask, my feeling is that where an artist and an author can contrive to work well together illustrations are a decided improvement to novels. But it is most trying to an author to see his characters presented to the public in a way utterly unlike his own conception of them.' In her view it is 'clear gain' if a book can be 'well illustrated'.
