Second edition of the first Latin translation (1519) of Graecarum affectionum curatio, Theodoret's (393-457) celebrated apologetic work composed against the last defenders of Hellenism. Intended as a vigorous piece of Christian propaganda, the treatise seeks to demonstrate the truth of the Gospel from within the philosophical tradition of the Greeks and other ancient peoples. Remarkably, the original Greek text did not appear in print until 1592, making Zenobio Acciaiuoli's (1415-1478) Latin version the principal vehicle through which Western scholars encountered the work for much of the 16th century.Zenobio Acciaiuoli was a distinguished Florentine Humanist of the famed Acciaiuoli family. In 1518 he was appointed Prefect of the Vatican Library by Pope Leo X, to whom this translation is dedicated. His rendering and adaptation of Theodoret's treatise played a crucial role in reintroducing Greek patristic literature to Renaissance Europe, particularly to readers without knowledge of the Greek language.The work itself is divided into twelve books. In these, Theodoret defends the truth of the Christian message, subjects Greek religion, mythology, and philosophy to a critical examination, and demonstrates that several Greek philosophers approached, albeit imperfectly, the insights later revealed fully by Christianity. He further exposes the irrational and morally troubling nature of pagan cults and practices. Graecarum affectionum curatio ranks among the most influential early Christian polemical and apologetic texts, a bridge between Classical thought and Christian doctrine.With 2 bookplates mounted on the first endpaper, the first ("Ex Bibliotheca D. Joannis Maineau, Canonici, Cathedralis Ecclesiae Rectoris"), the second ("J.L. Beijers wed 5-7 / Utrecht New and Old Books"). The work is slightly browned throughout. In 8° piccolo (16,2x10,2 cm); (24), 919, (1) pp. Legatura coeva in piena pergamena molle con titolo ed autore chiosati da mano coeva al dorso. Dorso a tre nervi. Al piatto anteriore, sbiadito e solo in minima parte leggibile, una massimo chiosata da mano cinquecentesca. Un piccolo tarletto al margine esterno bianco delle prime 6 carte e due forellini di tarlo al margine interno bianco delle ultime 4 carte, tutti ininfluenti e lontano dal testo. Il frontespizio presenta, al piatto anteriore due antiche pecette di rinforzo ai margini interno ed esterno. Nel complesso esemplare in buone-ottime condizioni di conservazione. Prima, rara edizione, nessun esemplare censito in ICCU, dell'etica di Aristotele, nella versione stampata dai fratelli Frellon che presenta il commento del celebre umanista, politico e scrittore, fiorentino Donato Acciaiuoli o Acciaioli (Firenze, 1429 Milano, 28 agosto 1478) che diverrà una delle versioni più celebri ed utilizzate nelle ristampe seguenti dell'etica aristotelica, particolarmente apprezzata per la sua accuratezza filologica. Acciaiuoli "Dopo aver brillantemente appreso la lingua greca, il latino e gli studi matematici quale allievo prediletto dell'Argiropulo, si dedicò alla traduzione di opere classiche dal greco al latino, come alcune delle Vite di Plutarco, e alla stesura di opere originali, soprattutto di carattere storico e filosofico, come i Commentari all'Etica di Aristotele, o le biografie di Carlo Magno, di Annibale, di Scipione l'Africano". Nello stesso anno, un'edizione del tutto identica, anche per i caratteri utilizzati, fu ristampata da Antoine Vincent che era in quegli anni, a tutti gli effetti, un collaboratore dei Frellon. Scrive Coline Silvestre nel suo "Les éditions d'Aristote à Lyon : des incunables aux Opera omnia de 1549" Universite de Lyon, 2013: "Par exemple l'Ethique de 1517 par Simon Vincent intègre le commentaire du maître scolastique Gilbert Crab avec la traduction d'Argyropoulos 111. En 1514, on trouve ces contributions-là au texte aristotélicien dans une édition d'Henri Estienne à Paris 112 mais le paratexte ainsi que les commentaires ne semblent pas être les mêmes notamment parce que Vincent a utilisé les tables de Gilles de Delft 113, mort en 1515. Dans la nouvelle disposition des composantes du texte résiderait l'innovation du libraire et la justification du privilège royal en tête de l'édition. Toujours pour l'Ethique, une édition de 1544 imprimée par les frères Frellon utilise le commentaire de Donato Acciaiuoli avec la traduction d'Argyropoulos 114, un schéma que l'on trouve pour la première fois semble-t-il, à Paris en 1541 chez Jean Loys et Jean de Roigny115. En revanche, le De Anima des frères Huguetan paru avec privilège en 1544116, commenté par Philopon et traduit par l'helléniste Gentien Hervet semble trouver son origine dans l'officine des deux frères qui en ont l'exclusivité. Nous reviendrons à ces éditions quelque peu à part dans le corpus quand il s'agira de leurs éditeurs et de leur présentation. [.] En 1544, les frères Frellon donnent leur première édition du philosophe. Ici encore, il s'agit de l'Éthique à Nicomaque. Bien que l'un des frères, Jean Frellon, édite les Opera omnia d'Aristote en 1549, et donc en d'autres termes, tout le corpus, nous considérons cette première édition comme isolée car elle n'est pas rattachée à une volonté d'éditer tous les traités, dont elle est par ailleurs séparée de cinq ans. Cette édition associe un commentaire de Donato Acciaiuoli à la traduction d'Argyropoulos. Les frères Frellon la partagent avec Antoine Vincent pour lequel ils l'impriment aussi en 1544. [.] La traduction est d'Argyropoulos, et Donato Acciaiuoli a élaboré le commentaire à partir de notes prises pendant les cours du premier à Florence. Là encore, le commentaire a un fondement scolaire. Après chaque chapitre, le commentaire mentionne entre crochets la portion de texte qu'il traite.".
