Covers heavily rubbed at the edges but cover illustration still bright and attractive, some fraying to corners and spine ends, hinges good, text block generally sound but no longer tight, remains of old flag decals on two blank pages, some discoloration to inner margins, pages otherwise mainly very clean with no names or other markings. Previous owner's inscription.; No date [1955]. 1955 reprint of a title that was first included in the Whitcombe's Story Books series in 1934. 96 pages. Card covers illustrated in red and black. Page dimensions: 179 x 122mm. Three full page illustrations, small vignette on title page, 2 small maps. An abridged edition for younger readers, ages 10 to 12. Escott-Inman's original work was a novel, based on the true story of a shipwreck on the Auckland Islands (one of New Zealand's groups of subantarctic islands) in 1907. Twelve lives were lost in the wreck, and fifteen survivors had to fend for themselves on Disappointment Island for eight months until their rescue.
