In his 60-year career he designed some of the most enduring images in Britain. Games produced hundreds of posters as well as stamps, book jackets and emblems, including those for the Festival of Britain (1951) and BBC Television (1953). Other clients included British Airways, the Financial Times, Guinness and Shell. During the Second World War he was appointed Official War Poster Designer. His personal philosophy of maximum meaning, minimum means gave all his works a distinctive conceptual and visual quality. This is a revised edition of the primary monograph on Games and features 180 colour illustrations of his best-known work as well as examples of unpublished designs and sketches from his own extensive archive.

His brilliant solution was to become iconic: the face of Shakespeare built up from the titles of all the plays as they appear in the First Folio. The poster has been seen all over the world; but Abram Games intended much more. After his death, his daughter Naomi discovered a mock up he had made of a flick book. As the reader flicked the pages, Games planned to make Shakespeare’s face gradually emerge. Now at last Games’ original project is coming to life. All 37 plays are included, in the order they are printed in the First Folio of 1623, ending with Pericles, Prince of Tyre, added to the collection in the Third Folio of 1664. At the end, the playwright makes a graceful exit, marked by the poems and the lost or doubtful plays. The book is completed with some favorite quotations, and the date of each work. Naomi Games has written a brief introduction about the history of Games’ image.

RARE ISSUE ON SILK. Original large format issue of Beck's iconic plan, colour-printed on silk, with the additional Abram Games designed "Festival of Britain 1951" logo upper right. (85 x 84 cm.) Remarkably clean and well preserved with just a very trivial blemishes. Taken from the 1950 edition of this map showing the District Line to Richmond running vertically rather than diagonally, parallel to the river (1951). The Festival of Britain was a post war national moral booster initiated by Herbert Morrison and designed to showcase the country's achievements across the board of science and the arts, centred on the South Bank of the Thames in London.
