Inkstamp to title, rear blank has large piece torn away at fore-edge. Internally very clean. Contemporary vellum, spine gilt with inked title, gilt borders, central gilt coat of arms of Gouda to each board, edges sprinkled red. Spine a bit darkened, a few smudgy marks, ties lost. Very good. Round ink stamp reading 'academia rueno traectina' (Utrecht) to title-page. The first of Abraham Gronovius's (1695-1775) editions of Pomponius Mela, "the earliest Roman geographer" (Ency. Brit. 11th edn.), incorporating the work of his father, Jakob Gronovius, who had himself published two editions of the work. "Pomponius is unique among ancient geographers in that [.] he asserts the existence of antichthones, inhabiting the southern temperate zone inaccessible to the folk of the northern temperate regions from the unbearable heat of the intervening torrid belt" (Ency. Bound in contemporary full calf, smooth decorated spine with red leather title label, both covers with the coat of arms of the Dutch town Zwolle ( Zwollae ) within a triple gilt fillet border, one fillet being a floral one. Traces of green silk ties. Prizebinding of the town of Zwolle (without the prize). Nicely preserved although the front hinge was expertly repaired.…

Zu Beginn des ersten Bandes innen mit größeren Wasserspuren, die sich durch die ersten 40 Seiten (Vorreden etc.) verliert, der reine Text nur stellenweise leicht gebräunt oder fleckig, gegen Ende des ersten Bandes im unteren weißen Rand stellenweise wieder ein wenig wasserfleckig. Im Text wurden im ersten Band an einigen Stellen kleine gestochene Abbildungen, u.a. von Medaillen, eingedruckt. So auf Seite 80 eine kleine Zweikampfszene mit Trainer(?). Mit einigen Schmuckinitialen jeweils am Anfang neuer "Bücher". Vereinzelt dezente Anstreichungen und Anmerkungen im Text. Der zweite Band ebenfalls lagenweise etwas gebräunt. Lederabklatsch auf den Innendeckeln und den Vor- bzw. Nachsätzen. Handschriftlicher Besitzvermerk aus dem Jahre 1884 des Pfarrers und Autoren (u.a. "Geschichte des Volkes Israel") Ludwig Seinecke, Hevensen (Südniedersachsen, bei Göttingen), auf dem vorderen fliegenden Vorsatz recto des ersten Bandes, dito auch im zweiten Band, dort jedoch ein weiterer aus 1910.
