Catalogue of the 1925 Budapest exhibition of Abel Pann, presenting the work of the Jerusalem-based Jewish artist to a Hungarian audience. Abel Pann (1883-1963), born Abba Pfeffermann in Latvia, studied art in Odessa and Paris before settling in Jerusalem, where he joined the faculty of the Bezalel School of Arts and Crafts. He became particularly known for his depictions of biblical subjects, for which he used the people and landscape of contemporary Palestine as visual models. The present catalogue accompanied a retrospective exhibition of Pann's work in Budapest in 1925. It includes nine plates reproducing his works and documents the early reception in Hungary of an artist closely associated with the development of Jewish art in Mandatory Palestine. . English-language edition. Complete with all 24 lithographic plates, each measuring approximately 12" x 9", together with the large folding preliminary title/index leaf. Plates printed in varying monochromatic tones of black, gray, sepia and reddish brown. Pann's haunting series depicts the persecution, displacement and suffering of Eastern European Jews during the pogroms of the First World War era, with subjects including The Cossacks Are Coming, The Flight, The Hostages, Under the Lash, The Cattle-Truck, Lost Children, En Route to Siberia, In the Streets of Warsaw and The Morning After the Pogrom. The designs originated in a larger series Pann began in 1916 in response to reports of anti-Jewish violence in Eastern Europe; 24 were selected for this 1926 Bezalel publication. Scattered foxing and staining to the plate leaves, heaviest to the first several plates and principally affecting the margins, though with some intrusion into the image areas; later plates generally cleaner. In 1903, Abel Pann was in Kishinev where he documented the Kishinev pogrom with drawings; an effort that is thought to have contributed to his self-definition as an artist who chronicles Jewish history. Yehudah of the Hebrew Palestine Exploration Fund requests additional security at the Wall to prevent the Arabs from continuing their repair works following a government decree. The Jews, while agreeing that the works were necessary, appealed to the British that they be made under supervision of the newly formed Department of Antiquities, because the Wall was an ancient relic.
