Einband beschabt und Rücken aufgeplatzt, innen gut. / Abel Pann, geboren als Abba Pfefferman, (* 1883 in Kreslawka, Gouvernement Witebsk, Kaiserreich Rußland, heute Weißrussland; 1963 in Jerusalem, Israel) war ein israelischer Künstler. Im Jahr 1903 wurde er in Kischinew in Bessarabien Zeuge eines Pogroms in der Stadt. Er studierte an der Académie Julian in Paris, unter anderem bei William Adolphe Bouguereau. Sein Zyklus "Der Tränenkrug" schildert in erschütternden Bildern Pogrome und Deportationen von Juden. Sprache: deutsch.

Portfolio (9 1/4" x 12 1/4"). 22 of 24 drawings & fold-out with title-page, colophon and foreword resting in original quarter-cloth over black paper-covered portfolio with illustrated cover plate, gold lettering and folding flaps. The drawings by Jewish artist, Abel Pann are reproduced in b/w and duo tone and show the infamous pogroms against Jews in the Ukraine & Czarist Russia in the late 1910's. The 'shocking' drawings remind modern viewers of depiction's of the Holocaust. Foreword by H. P. Chajes. Text in German. Age wear and staining on portfolio. Edges of folding flaps creased and partly chipped. Portfolio in fair, plates in overall very good condition. Incomplete with two plates missing.

Bibliotheksschildchen auf vorderem Deckel der Mappe, vorderer Lederdeckel mit einer handtellergroßen aufgeriebenen Stelle im Obermaterial, hinterer Deckel durch die Lagerung flacher in der Oberflächenstruktur des Leders, ansonsten Mappe außen in einem guten Erhaltungszustand, Titelblatt etwas angestaubt und am oberen Rand etwas knickspurig, Passepartouts leicht nachgedunkelt und in der rechten oberen Ecke mit einer kleinen Knickspur, Lithographien selber aber tadellos, - - - der Text des Titelblatts ist in Französisch, die Lithographien sind jeweils in 1 aufklappbares Passepartout eingelegt, dessen Vorderseite den zum Bild passenden Bibeltext in rot-schwarzem Druck auf Französisch zeigt, die Lithographieblätter haben unter den Lithographien noch einen sehr klein geschriebenen kurzen Text auf Englisch und Hebräisch.

In 1903, Abel Pann was in Kishinev where he documented the Kishinev pogrom with drawings; an effort that is thought to have contributed to his self-definition as an artist who chronicles Jewish history. (wikipedia) Twenty four powerful pictures depicting the pogroms and atrocities and the refugees on the run .It eerily looks like the future Nazi murders and roundups. The portfolio was issued as a fund raiser to the American Jewish Chronicle to gather money to help the refugees. Altogether (1+1 =) 2 pp. 4to and 8vo. Rare testimony of the first Jewish-Arab dispute over the Western Wall in 1920, the letter signed by A. L. Yehudah of the Hebrew Palestine Exploration Fund requests additional security at the Wall to prevent the Arabs from continuing their repair works following a government decree. The Jews, while agreeing that the works were necessary, appealed to the British that they be made under supervision of the newly formed Department of Antiquities, because the Wall was an ancient relic. On headed stationery (17 May 1920). - Autograph letter signed by the Israeli artist Abel Pann, undertaking to employ Kurt Meier as a lithographer in the Bezalel University College of Art (12 June 1924). - Perforated; with small marginal flaws.
