In den Warenkorb2 text volumes and 1 plate volume. First edition of a remarkable set on the city of Mecca, rarely encountered with the plate volume. The plates, here in the original portfolio, include 65 beautiful photographs, which are some of the earliest ever taken of the city of Mecca. They were made by Christiaan Snouck Hurgronje (1857-1936), a famous Dutch scholar of Oriental languages and culture, and his companion Al-Sayyid 'Abd al-Ghaffar (19th century), who is recognised as the first Meccan photographer. Snouck Hurgronje lived in Mecca for five months in 1885, and was the first non-Muslim to visit the city outside of the Hajj. The photographs were taken during this time and offer a fascinating glimpse into the lives of the Meccan people in the late 19th century. The photographs and lithographic plates show various buildings in Mecca, including the Kaaba and Al Hamidiyah palace. The vast majority, however, show beautiful portraits of Mecca's numerous colourful inhabitants and visitors, including the high Sharif and his scribe, the governor of the Hejaz region, Indian merchants, the local physician with his family, as well as hajjis from Zanzibar, Indonesia, Yemen, Uzbekistan, Malaysia, and many other places. The work is accompanied by two text volumes, which contain a historical survey of Mecca and a description of daily life in the city, complete with a folding map of Mecca, and a folding plan of the Sacred Mosque. With a purple stamp on the title page and final leaf of each text volume. The bindings of the text volumes are somewhat stained and scratched, with a handwritten shelf mark on the spine, the front board of the first volume is somewhat warped. The text volumes are somewhat browned throughout, with small tears in some of the margins, the final leaves in the second volume have been reinforced in the gutter, a vertical tear in the second map in the first volume, the errata leaf is detached but still present. The portfolio for the plates has been re-backed, the boards are somewhat soiled and browned. The leaves that the photographs are mounted on are somewhat browned, but the photographs themselves are in excellent condition.l Cf. Macro 1239 (only the text volumes); Vrolijk, A. and Leeuwen, R. van, Arabic studies in the Netherlands, a short history in portraits, 1580-1950, pp.117-150. Contemporary half brown buckram, grey paper sides, with the title, author, and volume number lettered in gold on the spine. The plates are kept in the original portfolio of quarter dark brown cloth, beige printed paper sides, and a closing tie in the middle of the fore edge. With 65 mounted collotype photographs, 6 toned lithographic plates (1 folding, 5 full-page), 4 full-page chromolithographic plates, and a letterpress table of contents in the plate volume. Further with 2 folding maps, and 3 genealogical tables in the first text volume. Pages: [1], [1 blank], XXIII, [1], 228; [1], [1 blank], XVIII, 397, [1 blank] pp.; [1], 40 ll. With: IDEM. Bilder-atlas zu Mekka.Idem. Text volumes large 8vo (25 x 17.5 cm), plate volume folio (38 x 29 cm).

8 albumen prints. Various sizes, 151 x 178 - 153 x 203 mm. 4 of the photographs captioned in Arabic and/or signed in the negative. Mounted on cardboard (248 x 298 mm). Stamped in blue. Some of the earliest photographs of Mecca and the Kaaba, including panoramic views produced in the 1880s by Abd al-Ghaffar and Mohammad Sadiq Bey, pioneers of photography of the holy sites of Islam in Arabia. - Abd al-Ghaffar was the first resident of Mecca to photograph the holy sites among which he lived and worked, producing some of the earliest photographs of the Kaaba and the sights of the Hajj. Muhammad Sadiq Bey (1822/32-1902) was an Ottoman Egyptian army engineer and surveyor who served as treasurer of the Hajj pilgrim caravan. As a photographer and author, he documented the holy sites of Islam at Mecca and Medina, taking the first ever photographs in what is now Saudi Arabia. Bey was also the first to document the Hajj realistically on camera. - The present set includes the middle section of Bey's larger panoramic view of Mecca produced in 1880, this detail showing the Kaaba and Mataf area with apartment complexes in the background. It further comprises two photographs by Abdullatif Fida, including a shot of the Mataf area featuring Bab Bani Shaybah, one of the original entrances into the Masjid al-Haram precinct, a free-standing arch demolished in 1967. The remaining (unsigned) images show another view of Mecca, a rare image of the Mahmal transported aboard a railway carriage, and two impressive close-ups of the Ka'aba surrounded by pilgrims. One of these is held by the Library of Congress, dating it around 1910. - Cardboard backing somewhat worn, occasional waterstains. The images proper in fine condition; a single specimen slightly faded. A rare ensemble.

Albumen photograph captioned in Arabic in-plate, 185 x 243 mm. Rare albumen photograph, produced by the first ever Arab photographer of the city of Mecca. Abd al-Ghaffar was the first resident of Mecca to photograph the holy sites among which he lived and worked, producing some of the earliest photographs of the Kaaba and the sights of the Hajj. He ranks alongside the likes of Ottoman-Egyptian engineer and photographer Mohammad Sadiq Bey (1822/32-1902) and the Dutch photographer Christiaan Snouck Hurgronje (1857-1936), with whom he worked closely, as a pioneer photographer of not only Mecca, but of the holy sites of Islam throughout the Arabian Peninsula. - Perhaps very slightly sunned; in excellent condition.

In den Warenkorb5 glass positive lantern slides (85 × 100 mm), each with a black paper mask, paper tape around the edges, a letterpress slip at the foot giving the publisher's name and city, and a slip at the head with the manuscript title. Stored in a contemporary purpose-made wooden box with brass fittings, with the word "Mekka" on the top of the hinged lid. Five of the earliest and best photographs of Mecca and Medina, beautifully preserved as silver gelatin glass plates, including the first photograph of the Ka'ba in Mecca's Masjid al-Haram (Great Mosque). Two of the photographs were taken by the first person to photograph Mecca and Medina, the Egyptian Colonel Muhammad Sadiq Bey (1832-1902), who made them in 1880 for the Ottoman Sultan Abdülhamid II. The others were taken by the first European to photograph Mecca, Christiaan Snouck Hurgronje, and Al-Sayyid 'Abd al-Ghaffâr, who worked closely with him. Snouck Hurgronje (1857-1936), one of the greatest pioneering Dutch Arabists, converted to Islam and lived in Mecca from January to about July 1885. The photographs by these three men are best known and most frequently reproduced from the published collotype facsimiles, while the rare surviving early albumen prints are usually faded or otherwise in bad condition. The present five plates, sold as lantern slides for magic lantern presentations, are therefore of the greatest importance as well-preserved high quality specimens of these famous photographs, providing the best early images of the mosques of Mecca and Medina. - All five slides are in very good condition, with only a bit of dust and the occasional smudge on the glass. They show: 1) The Masjid al-Haram in Mecca (the Great Mosque); 2) a closer view of the Ka'ba in Mecca; 3) the portrait of an unidentified Mu'ezzin in Mecca; 4) a portrait of an unidentified East Indian pilgrim; 5) the al-Masjid an-Nabawi in Medina (the Prophet's Mosque). - Cf. D. v.d. Wal, Christiaan Snouck Hurgronje (2011); J. J. Witkam, new introduction to the 2007 reprint of the 1931 English translation of Hurgronje, Mekka.
