Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - The Life of Saint Mary of Egypt is the story of Mary, a young woman who fully abandoned herself to living in sin, not for the sake of gain but to gratify her unbridled lust, until she came to herself through God's intervention, and fled to the desert, to lead a life of profound repentance until her repose in AD 421.This is the story of the love of God, who seeks the salvation for every soul, no matter how deep someone may have sunk into the mire sin; it is the story of severe repentance from a severely sinful life, of cleansing the heart with profuse tears for a life wasted in filth; it is the story of love for God who loved us first, of striving to lead a life pleasing to God, after having lived for sinful pleasures. Though it may seem to be from a forgotten time, the remembrance of this story is crucial for all, that it may kindle in us fervent love for God and zeal to offer true repentance for our sins, that we may obtain an ending pleasing to God, like that of St. Mary of Egypt.

In den WarenkorbSoft cover. Zustand: Fine. 1st Edition, Limited Edition. 12mo., [4], 5pp., [2], bound in the original mould-made covers with a pictorial design of an Ionian Cross to upper cover. A fine clean bright copy of this scarce work. One of a 1,000 copies printed. Set in Eric Gill's Joanna. 1000 copies printed in England at the Stanbrook Abbey Press, Worcester on Abbey Mills Text paper. Covers mould-made by Barcham Green, Maidstone. Iona is an island in the Inner Hebrides, off the Ross of Mull on the western coast of Scotland. It is mainly known for Iona Abbey, though there are other buildings on the island. Iona Abbey was a centre of Gaelic monasticism for three centuries and is today known for its relative tranquility and natural environment. It is a tourist destination and a place for spiritual retreats. Its modern Scottish Gaelic name means "Iona of (Saint) Columba". The press founded at Stanbrook Abbey near Worcester in 1876 was unique: run by a religious community, rather than an individual or partnership, it stood at the interface between book design and religious belief. Famously the press was associated in the early 20th century with one of the great figures of English bibliography, Sir Sydney Cockerell (1867-1962); he in turn introduced the nuns to Emery Walker (1851-1933) and C. H. St John Hornby (1867-1946). The press enjoyed a golden age under the direction of Dame Hildelith Cumming (1909-1991), who was printer from 1955 until her death in 1991. With the encouragement of Dutch typographer Jan van Krimpen (1892-1958) and the English designer John Dreyfus (1918-2002), Dame Hildelith developed a distinctive Stanbrook style: the use of characterful typefaces, expertly printed on fine hand-made papers; the deployment of white space to allow texts to breathe ; and a liveliness achieved through coloured inks, calligraphic decoration and fine bindings. David Butcher, the press s bibliographer, summed up its achievement: Collectively the books published by the Press earn it a place as one of the world s major private presses The books are an enduring testament to the Benedictine aim of employing human talents to the glory of God. (David Butcher, The Stanbrook Abbey Press, 1956-1990 (Lower Marston: Whittington Press, 1992), p. 31.).
