Abbey was a prominent American illustrator, noted for his period drawings for Harper's and numerous literary volumes in the style of Hugh Thomson. "He was an important link with American drawing for British artists and was influential in introducing the taste for 18th century subjects and themes" (Houfe). A sketch from Abbey's illustration of "The Two Gentleman of Verona", according to printed and manuscript material accompanying the lot. Apparently removed from the limited edition of Edwin Austin Abbey: the Record of his Life and Work, one of 50 copies with an original drawing. 8-3/4 by 5-3/4 inches, mounted to 10 by 7 1/2 inch leaf.
