In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: Very Good. 1st Edition. Text largely handset in Winchester Roman an experimental Linotype face designed by Dwiggins, One of 120 copies designed by Dorothy Abbe, excellently illustrated, with a tipped-in portrait frontispiece. Black paper-covered boards, linen back titled and decorated in black. Upper cover slightly chafed at one point. A very good bright copy.
New York, Harry N. Abrams, (1970). 36 x 28 cm. Decorated cloth with original acetate dust jacket. xxii, 236 p. Numerous photos. Color illustrations pasted in. 1st edition. Fine. A huge, coffee-table-sized and very funny book about the great hobby of typographer and type designer William A. Dwiggins (1880-1956): making marionettes in the appearance of his friends and acquaintances, and giving performances with them. Dorothy Abbe was Dwiggins' assistant for many years. She inherited the puppets from Dwiggins' wife and compiled this book of them, with photos mostly taken by her. In this copy three original photographs were inserted, taken by 'D.A.', Dorothy Abbe, one measuring 26.0 x 33.0 cm showing the theatre specially built by Dwiggins. On the back are typographical instructions in pen, and in pencil 'Dwiggins Studio', the address and 'Photo by D.A.', possibly written by the photographer. This photo is not pristine: a few creases, and the lower corners are folded. The second photo (17.0 x 12.5 cm) is pristine and shows a completely undressed marionette, with 'photo by D.A.' on the back. The third original photo (25.0 x 13.0 cm) is nice, and in very reasonable condition, and shows William Dwiggins with the marionette of himself, on his knee. On the reverse is written in pencil 'Photo by D.A./ c. 1939' plus typographical instructions in ballpoint pen. There is a yellow sticker on verso with the text in Will van Krimpen's handwriting 'Remembrance of many clams and whisky sours with Dorothy 1968'! Apparently the photos were used in a magazine article, but I couldn't locate it. Also with an (empty) stamped envelope addressed to 'Mr + Mrs Huib van Krimpen' with the printed address '45 Irving Street/ Hingham' of the theater annex studio of Dwiggins on the reverse.
