In 1867 and 1889, the Maison Stern was awarded the Gold Medal at these two World's Fairs. Moïse Stern would later occasionally serve as a member of the jury that awarded this medal. The arrangement of the text is unusual: the scientific and practical monograph (under various chapter headings: origins, classification, cultivation, etc.) is printed on the lower half of the recto of each text leaf with the description of the facing plate on the upper half. First edition of the most celebrated illustrated monograph on the camellia. Abbé Lorenzo Berlèse (1784-1863) was an Italian priest who became fascinated with the camellia plant upon his move to Paris, where he was to be a chaplain. Camellias captured the Western imagination when travelers to Japan and China would return with the so-called "Japan rose". It was named camellia by Carl Linneaus, and began to be cultivated successfully and in larger numbers toward the end of the eighteenth century. Berlèse accumulated a significant collection of camellias over twenty years, eventually deciding to record them in the present monograph. J. J. Jung, a lesser-known artist, engraved the plates in a striking and exquisite style, affirming the strong influence of Redouté over botanical works of this period. In 1846 he sold his collection of plants before returning to Italy. Sumptuous contemporary French green glazed full-calf binding, richly gilded, flat spines with overall decorative design incorporating the title, author and volume numbers. In excellent condition with slight wear. Four out of the 300 engravings are missing.
