An der berühmten Übersetzerschule von Toledo wurde der Text in das Lateinische übertragen. Durch diese Übersetzung in der zweiten Hälfte des 14. Jh.s wurde die Chirurgia vor dem Vergessen bewahrt. Im Hoch- und Spätmittelalter galt sie als bedeutendstes medizinisches Traktat. 68 Miniaturen zeigen anschaulich die im Text beschriebenen Behandlungsmethoden: Es werden Glüheisentherapie (40 Miniaturen), Aderlass (16 Miniaturen) und Wundbehandlung wie auch Geburtshilfe (9 Miniaturen) und die Versorgung gebrochener oder verrenkter Glieder (3 Miniaturen) - zum größten Teil in quadratischen Bildern - gezeigt. Die Chirurgia beschreibt nicht nur die verschiedenen Methoden, auch die notwendigen Instrumente werden vorgestellt. Diese Handschrift ist nicht nur für Mediävisten, Kunst- und Medizinhistoriker von immenser Bedeutung - auch als Zeugnis für die fruchtbare Zusammenarbeit von Orient und Okzident. Zudem ist ihre Tradierung in Form der Übersetzung eines der repräsentativsten Beispiele für die Wertschätzung antiken Wissens im europäischen Mittelalter.
