This book was published to accomp…any the exhibition of work by Henri Matisse (1869-1954) held at the Statens Museum fur Kunst, Copenhagen from 14 July to 28 October 2012. The exhibition then toured to the Metropolitan Museum in New York the following year. An earlier version of the exhibition had previously been held at the Centre Pompidou, Paris from 7 March to 18 June 2012. Throughout his long career, Matisse continually expanded the boundaries of his art. By repeating images in pairs, trios and series, he conducted an ongoing dialogue with his earlier works. In this book, prominent scholars from the USA and Europe examine more than sixty works that focus on this aspect of Matisse's working process.
