Lo que recorre todos los textos reunidos en este libro es la creencia común de que la filosofía política de Hegel es emocionante, significativa e impresionante, y que su estudio gratifica ampliamente el esfuerzo requerido para comprenderla. Si el estudio de los filósofos políticos del pasado ha de redundar en beneficio, por así decirlo, del campo de la ciencia política y social más que de la historia de la filosofía o de la historia intelectual en general, debe tener cierta pertinencia respecto de los temas de los cuales se ocupan los teóricos políticos y sociales actuales. Tal estudio debería al menos echar luz sobre la actividad de estos pensadores al mostrar los fracasos y éxitos de otras mentes que se ocuparon de problemas similares. Sin embargo, debe satisfacerse otra condición antes de que se obtenga un beneficio pleno de ese abordaje: los conceptos, los argumentos o las teorías de los filósofos políticos del pasado deben traducirse en un lenguaje que sea comprensible para los teóricos políticos y sociales contemporáneos. En el caso de Hegel, ésta es una tarea particularmente dificultosa porque su filosofía política es parte de un sistema filosófico general y también porque la teoría política y social moderna está comprometida con el pensamiento lógico y empírico, mientras que Hegel al menos, a primera vista parece mostrar un gran desprecio por el empirismo y la lógica no dialéctica. páginas/pasges.
