Shakespaare Das Schreiben einer mehr oder weniger ausführlichen Übersicht über ein bestimmtes Gebiet verpflichtet den Autor selbstverständlich, gleich in den ersten Sätzen anzukündigen, worum es sich bei seiner Darstellung handeln soll. Wenn es sich um die Beschreibung der anabolen Steroide handelt, so ist dies jedoch keineswegs einfach. Schon die Fixierung des Begriffes 'Steroide' ist offensichtlich so schwierig, daß sogar FIESER, dessen Kapazität auf dem Steroidgebiet doch unbestritten ist, in seinem Buch 'Steroide' keine Definition dafür gibt. Vor 1950 war es mehr oder weniger die allgemeine Lehrmeinung, daß Steroide Derivate des 2ß,4 bß -Dimethyl-1ß,2rx-cyclopentano-4arx,8rx, lOaß -perhydrophenan threns sind. Wenn man diese einschließlich der zwei Methylgruppen in 2ß- und 4b ß-Stellung zugrunde legt, bedeutet das, daß die 19-nor (und 18-nor-) Steroide, bei denen eine dieser Gruppen nicht vorhanden ist, nicht zu den Steroiden gehören. Aber gerade unter diesen findet man sehr wichtige anabole 'Steroide'. Gleiches gilt hinsichtlich der sog. Retrosteroide, die die Bedingungen einer stereochemischen Konfiguration 4a rx,4 b ß nicht erfüllen. Unter diesen Umständen scheint es zutreffender zu sein, die Definition weiter zu fassen und zu den Steroiden alle die Stoffe zu rechnen, die von Cyclo pentanophenanthrenen ableitbar sind. Um Mißverständnissen vorzu beugen, sei schließlich darauf hingewiesen, daß die oben verwendete Numerierung der 0-Atome diejenige ist, welche bei der Beschreibung von Phenanthrenderivaten angewendet wird.
