Its author is unknown but is conventionally referred to as Cassius Longinus (c.213-273 AD), a Greek rhetorician and philosophical critic. It is regarded as a classic work on aesthetics and the effects of good writing. The treatise highlights examples of good and bad writing from the previous millennium, focusing particularly on what may lead to the sublime. The present edition has been translated by A.O. Prickard and includes an introduction, appendix and index. The book is bound in the original green cloth covered boards with gold titling on the spine. The case of the book is in very good condition with some shelf wear to the boards and light bumping to the spine ends. The contents are tight and clean with light foxing to the endpapers and some scattered light foxing elsewhere within the book, including some marks on the title-page. A name, address and date (1948) has been written on the front fixed endpaper.
