The aim of this book is to highlight the current activities in algal research in the country. Emphasis has been given to taxonomy and biology of the algae as a whole. Charophytes and cyanophytes (cyanobacteria) have been given special attention. The former groups has drawn considerable attention of the plant biologists since they are now established as progenitors of land plants. Cytotaxonomy morphotaxonomy and phylogency of this group has also been given proper position in this treatise. On the other hand cyanophytes are important because they are the primary colonizers of denuded land. Due to their twin ability of nitrogen fixation and photosynthesis they influence considerably the ecology of different niches. Their genetic make up taxonomy and ecology germplasm conserv.

"This monograph covers a comprehensive review of Indian works on Zygnemataceae updating the list of new taxa described so far, record of originally described species from Indian habitats and addition of taxa to Indian algae. Abnormal behaviour during conjugation, plasticity related to taxonomy, co-existing species and species complex find a place in the review. The taxonomic part includes the descriptions of 127 taxa (with illustrations) under 7 genera, their distribution in India and abroad and a dichotomous key to them. Of these, 44 taxa (18 species, 16 varieties, 10 formae) are new to science. A numerical approach to find out affinities in some taxa of Spirogyra on the basis of their conventional key characters was attempted. A discussion of taxonomy and ecology of the group was followed with general conclusion and recommendations." (jacket).

Hardcover. Zustand: New. It is a well-known fact that flora and fauna of any fresh water habitat cannot remain the same forever, they vary in accordance with time and space. Keeping this in mind a serious attempt was made to work out on flora of that part of the region which was somehow overlooked by the preceding explorers. The present monograph accommodates the result in its ambit and therefore it is considered as an extended part of the past volume (Kargupta and Swati Kumari 2022) and it titled as Oedogoniales (Chlorophyceae) of Bihar, India part II. The present treaties embraces descriptions of a total of 57 species comprising discovery of 10 taxa as new to science, 10 taxa as new record to India and 21 taxa as additions to Algae of Bihar. The present volume also includes a chapter especially on taxonomic distinction of the group and its evolutionary status. Supporting evidences on taxonomic integrity of taxa described include altogether 44 plates containing 160 microphotographs and 98 camera-lucida drawings.
