In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: Very Good. First Edition. Hardback. Oblong folio (21.7 x 25.0 cm). Title page, 2 pp.; 51 of 58 illustrations in three different colours. All 10 Much plates present (see Forum lot 466 20/3/23) In original printed portfolio with quarter grey cloth over pictorial boards with grey cloth ties. A great collection of ornamental designs in Jugendstil or Art Nouveau style. Each printed in three colours, although the colours selected vary from plate to plate. Each design is monogrammed, either M for the great Czech Art Nouveau artist Alfons Maria "Alphonse" Mucha ; MPV for Verneuil , or C-L (apparently for Georges Auriol). The plate numbers one and two are used for the ornamented title page and first preface page. The text was written by the French designer and illustrator Maurice Pillard Verneuil (1869-1942), one of the foremost French Art Nouveau artists. Jean-Georges Huyot (better known as Jean George Auriol, or just George Auriol; 1863-1938) was known as a graphic designer, and typographer. As noted by Schneider-Henn, Mucha's contributions are mostly linear, although some are pictorial, and those by Auriol clearly show a Japanese influence. Boards slightly soiled, spine ends very slightly frayed and slightly split at hinge, plates clean and bright, overall about VG. Mucha had a privileged relationship with the Librairie Centrale des Beaux Arts. When he arrived in Paris in 1890; they were among the first to give him commissions for illustrations. They also published his key theoretical essays, the Documents Lithographiques and the Documents Decoratifs. The Combinaisons Ornementales, which is justifiably considered to be the bible of Art Nouveau decorative elements, is an exceptional collection of Art Nouveau patterns and designs which "se multipliant a l'infini a l'aide du miroir.".

Paris, Librairie Central des Beaux Arts, 1901. Folio (46 x 33 cm). Original print. = A beautiful print from Alphonse Mucha's quintessential Art Nouveau book, Documents décoratifs. Alfons "Alphonse" Maria Mucha (1860-1939) was a Czech decorative artist, who wanted to bring aesthetic values into arts and crafts. He invented the "Mucha Style" which soon became known as Art Nouveau. His work immediately became immensely popular and remained very sought-after ever since. This plate shows two sides of this gifted artist: his ability to produce fine images in lithography, but also his practical design skills, in this case for jewelry, including pins and rings. Slight toning towards the edges; outer edge with some light creasing; a few, tiny spots, otherwise fine. Very rare, especially in this good state.

This plate shows examples of horizontal bands with repeating patterns: the top one showing stag beetles and flowers, the second showing turtles and flowers, the third fish, bubbles, and "waves", and the fourth consisting of female portraits in circular frames and narrow, ornamental bands, suggesting a corniche, frieze, and architrave. Lower edge with a short tear; a few minute marginal spots; otherwise fine. Very rare, especially in this excellent state.
The Netherlands [or Belgium], ca. 1898. Six uniform, printed cards. Oblong cards (9.3 x 14.0 cm). Printed on both sides. = A fine set of six Art Nouveau postcards with full colour illustrations after the great Jugendstil artist, Alfons "Alphonse" Maria Mucha (1860-1939), with his autograph. The publisher is unknown. Probably published in the Netherlands, as a Belgian publisher would more probably have printed a French as well as a Dutch text. Well-preserved. Not used. Slight age-toning, a few tiny irregularities - including a small spot on one card - at the edges, otherwise very good, unmarked. Rare, as we found no reference at all, although a very similar card is known from a French publisher.
