"An admirable practical handbook of photography" (DSB). - "Gaudin, der durch Verwendung von Bromdämpfen die Lichtempfindlichkeit noch steigerte und mit Kameras arbeitete, die kleiner (Sechstel- oder Achtelplatten) und folglich lichtstärker waren als die Apparate von Lerebours, war in der Lage, Schnappschüsse von belebten Straßenszenen zu machen. Schon 1843 hat sich Gaudin offenbar als erster an Kinderporträts gewagt - ein Sujet, für das schnelle Reaktion und kurze Belichtungszeiten so erforderlich sind wie ein psychologisches Einfühlungsvermögen" (Gernsheim, Geschichte der Photographie S. 109). "Das wichtige, bis in die heutige Zeit im Kollodiumverfahren in Gebrauch gebliebene Zyankalium wurde von Gaudin 1843 eingeführt. Gaudin benutzte es zunächst nach dem Fixieren der Daguerreotypie als Silberbad, um den Bildern bessere Sichtbarkeit zu geben, er fand jedoch bald, 'daß das Hyposulfitbad überflüssig sei, indem das Silberbad fast augenblicklich die empfindliche Schicht auflöst'" (Baier, Geschichte der Fotografie S. 336). - Stellenweise gering stockfleckig, die Vorsätze etwas stärker und die Ränder leicht gebräunt. The title page and first few leaves show an early dampstain and foxing; the foxing diminishes to light for the majority of the text. A very good copy.
