Army physician Andrew Leith Adams (1827-1882) took an interest in the natural history of any part of the British Empire in which he was stationed, whether it be India, Egypt, Gibraltar, or Canada. Eventually he became a professor of zoology in the Royal College of Science, Dublin, followed by professor of natural history in Queen's College, Cork.
