La sociologia oggi in Italia, pur essendo una disciplina largamente diffusa all'interno e al di fuori delle università e dell'ambiente scolastico in genere, raramente viene spiegata e quindi compresa nella sua realtà di pratica accademica e scientifica avente le sue origini in precise esigenze della società contemporanea. Solitamente infatti i testi di sociologia, inclusi i manuali, sono rivolti più ad un ambiente di «addetti ai lavori» che ad un pubblico non introdotto e che non desideri necessariamente addentrarsi in maniera specialistica nella materia. Il merito di questo manuale, frutto di corsi universitari svolti in Olanda da due giovani professori, pur con i limiti accademici che sono propri a quasi tutti i testi «introduttivi», è duplice: da una parte infatti deprofessionalizza il linguaggio e la pratica dei sociologi fornendo gli strumenti per demisti- ficarne la teoria e per tradurre in un discorso comprensibile a tutti il senso del lavoro che essi fanno. Dall'altra facendo ampio uso di criteri descrittivi e casistici esemplifica al massimo gli assiomi, i concetti, le categorie della sociologia mostrandone apertamente, sia pure inconsapevolmente, l'ori- gine e la funzione di classe. Il libro, i cui dati statistici e la bibliografia sono stati aggiornati alla situazione italiana, è stato curato da Francesca Zajczyk ed Enzo Mingione. In appendice uno scritto di Mingione fa il punto sulla «crisi della sociologia» in Italia. Mok e Jager, olandesi, sono entrambi professori universitari.
