Covers have cracking and a significant loss of paper to spines, chipping to edges, age toning and stains to surfaces, and wear throughout. Volume 1 front cover is detached from spine. Disbound, but pagination appears consistent. Textblocks have uncut edges throughout, tears to edges, age toning and foxing throughout. Bound in quarter blue leather with blue marbled paper boards, and a paneled spine bearing gilt titling and tooling both gilt and blind. Spine has material loss to headcap (headband intact,) scattered white staining, and chipping and rubbing throughout. Boards have creasing along joints, bumping to fore corners exposing the material beneath, shelfwear to edges, and scuffing to boards. Text block has speckled edges, marbled endpapers, and a bound-in green ribbon bookmark; light foxing to edges, light dust soiling to fore and bottom edges, and moderate dust soiling to top edge; bookseller's bookplate to front pastedown, toning to first few leaves and catalog supplement at rear, and stress marks to lower right corners of catalog supplement. Ex-library with associated label to spine, bookplate to front pastedown, call number in pen to front free endpaper verso, and stamps to text block. Text in French. Shelved in Room A octavo overflow. Prior to the mid-19th century, vesicovaginal and related fistulas (abnormal openings between the urinary/digestive tracts and the vagina, often caused by obstructed labor) were considered practically incurable. Women suffering from them experienced constant incontinence and severe, lifelong physical and social distress. Antoine-Joseph Jobert de Lamballe's (1799-1867) work was published the same year as an American book on the topic, and together they helped reduce the dangers and complications women faced in childbirth. The author of this landmark treatise on gynecological surgery was a prominent French surgeon, member of the Académie Nationale de Médecine, and personal surgeon to Emperor Napoléon III until his death. 1416140.
