In den WarenkorbSoft cover. Zustand: Very Good. 1st Edition. 12mo. (20 cm.) 151[1]p. Profusely (!!) illustrated throughout with black and white drawings, including many full-page captioned drawings and a black and white map on the last page of the Santa Fe route from Chicago to California. Stapled booklet in cream colored wrappers printed in red on the front cover and with decorations in red and green, one of a sunburst (red), the other of a wreath (green). Wrappers somewhat soiled, one inch abrasion to leading edge of rear wrapper, chip missing from lower right corner of front wrapper, spine repaired with clear tape by previous owner, all drawings in fine condition, map in fine condition, else very good to near fine with no internal markings. Early in the decade of the 1890s, the Santa Fe Railroad gained a reputation for producing the finest of all railroad booklets. That reputation was largely the result of one man's talent and initiative. C[harles] A[lford] Higgins built a career writing exceptional booklets that invited attention and compelled remembrance. In so doing, he differentiated the Santa Fe from the rest of the pack. While his booklets were typical in that they described the region through which his line passed, Higgins alone authored finely crafted narratives, "finely illustrated, without too much railroad talk in them." (Michael E. Zega, "?Advertising the Southwest," Journal of the Southwest, 2001.) Nearly every page bears several gem-like illustrations by John Tinney McCutcheon, a Chicago newspaper artist, who also provided many full-page illustrations depicting scenes along the way, including iconic Native Americans. Front matter includes 2-page advertisement and the last page is a map of the Santa Few route. The first edition of a classic work on early travel by train to California. J.T. McCutcheon [John Tinney] (illustrator).…
