L'auteur propose un outil pédagogique pour l'étude de la « Alfiyyah » d'Ibn Mâlik (1203-1274), grammairien andalou dont l'ouvrage en mille vers (Alfiyyah) devint le texte de base de l'enseignement de la grammaire arabe classique à travers tout le monde musulman. Goguyer offre ici une présentation méthodique, en langue française, assortie de notes philologiques, d'explications grammaticales et d'un appareil critique qui permet de confronter la tradition grammaticale arabe à l'approche linguistique occidentale du XIXe siècle. Ce manuel témoigne de l'effort savant de l'époque pour rendre accessible aux érudits européens un texte qui, depuis le XIII siècle, formait la colonne vertébrale de l'enseignement grammatical dans les madrassas pour permettre la compréhension des textes en arabe ancien ou littéraire. Antonin A. Goguyer, arabisant et orientaliste français, interprète judiciaire à Tunis, il se spécialisa dans la traduction de textes de grammaire et de droit musulman (Traité de flexion et syntaxe d'Ibn Hijam, 1887 ; Manuel pour l'étude des grammairiens arabes. La Alfiyyah d'Ibnou-Malik, 1888). Établi en Afrique du Nord puis au Moyen-Orient, il mena parallèlement des activités commerciales, notamment dans le Golfe persique et à Oman, où il fit du commerce d'armes. Ses écrits révèlent un souci constant de renforcer l'influence française face à la puissance britannique, ce qui lui valut la réputation d'agent d'influence officieux. Il mourut à Mascate en 1909, léguant sa riche bibliothèque arabe à l'Université Saint-Joseph de Beyrouth.…
