Hardcover. Zustand: Good. 10 short books and pamphlets bound together. The binding is broken into sections, as noted below. When they're stacked together, they have the spine-curve of a complete book, but as detailed below, it's broken into sections, which could be rebound individually. Front cover detached. Two blank pages loose. A third page with handwritten (partial) table of contents also loose. Half title page to The Caution loose. The first three titles still attached to each other in remains of original binding. The Caution; recommended to the Least Honourable Countesses of England. London. J. Owen. 1797. 24 pages. "From the author" handwritten at the top right or title page. Author's name handwritten below the title, "Jonathan Fearnside, Esq" (but none of the reprint copies online mention his name, or any name as author). 24 pages. Dedicated to the Earl of Liverpool. None available. ** A Letter to the Rt. Hon. Sir James Eyre, Lord Chief Justice of the Common Pleas; On the subject of the cause, Boulton & Watt, v. Hornblower & Maberly: For Infrignement on Mr. Watt's Patent for the Improvement on the Steam Engine By Joseph Bramah, engineer. London. John Stockdale. 1797. 90 pages. None available. Bramah wrote a book on locks in 1785 and patented several items in the late 1700s. Watt's patent on the steam engine was in 1769. Hornblower invented a compound steam engine in 1781, but it was judged to be an infringement on Watt's patent, so he was not able to pursue it, even though it was more efficient and more powerful than Watt's. This short book is a detailed explanation of why Hornblower's work is original and why the judgement against him should be reconsidered. ** A Reply to the Monthly Reviewers; and some letters between them and the Author By A Suffolk Freeholder. Printed and sold by J. Rackham. 1795 24 pages. Author's name handwritten on the title page, "Rev. Stewart." Letters about some accusations against a Mr. Fox and an increasingly frustrated correspondent. No copies available. ** Narrative of the Shipwreck of the Juno, on the Coast of Aracan, and of the singular preservation of fourteen of her company on the wreck, without food, during a period of twenty-three days; in a letter to his father, the Rev. Thomas Mackay. By William Mackay London. J. Derbrett. 1798. Handwritten note on the page facing the title page, "N.B. The facts were supplied by Mr. W. Mackay but the narrative was written or at least in its present for by his brother Mr Mackay, late of the India Board. J.C." On the title page, the words "Narrative of the" appear to be handwritten, but the rest of the page is clearly printed. Vii + 59 pages. ** Notes on the Etymology of a few Antique Words By Mr. Brothers London. G. Ribeau. 1796 8 pages. No others. This section is detached from the text block, but complete unto itself. ** [the remaining sections and title are still bound together in the original binding, with leather on the spine.] ** A Revealed Knowledge of the Prophecies & Times. "They Must At Least Stand Convicted of a Rash, Intemperate, and Improvident Zeal" A Freeholder of Cornwall. [Gregor, Francis (1760-1815)]. Two Letters: The First Containing Some Remarks on the Meeting Held 5th November, 1809, To Celebrate the Acquittal of Messrs. Hardy, J.H. Tooke, Thelwall, And Others, In November 1794: With an Abstract of the Facts Proved on those Trials, And Also of the Confession of James Watt, Executed at Edinburgh for High Treason in October 1794. The Second Containing a Short Comparative Sketch of Our Practical Constitution in Ancient Times and the Present; With Some Observations on Certain Assertions Made by the Modern Reformers. London: Printed for J. Hatchard, 1810. [iv], 57, [3] pp. With a half-title and final advertisement leaf. Octavo (8-1/4" x 5-1/4"). Stab-stitched pamphlet in recent marbled boards, paper title label to spine. Light toning to interior, light soiling to a few leaves, faint early ownership signature to head of half-title affected by trimming. A nice copy. $450. * Only edition. Gregor was an English landowner and MP for Cornwall from 1709-1806. Here, he is highly critical of notable radicals Thomas Hardy, John Horne Tooke, John Thelwall and Robert Watt, not so much for their beliefs in reform as their methods and enthusiasm, which he deems "rash, intemperate, and improvident." He further criticizes the Constitutional and London Corresponding Societies for condoning and even celebrating the acts of these radicals, citing evidence from their trials to highlight their destructive nature.
