He also served as National Security Advisor to President Ronald Reagan (1987-1989) and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff from 1989-1993. Powell was discussed as a possible Republican presidential contender in 1996 and 2000, but he declined to run both times. He passed away in 2021, survived by his wife of nearly 60 years, Alma Powell. See his entry in the Oxford DNB. ONE: Autograph draft of conclusion of description of his meeting with Mehmet Ali ('Mehemet Ali'). The ODNB states that in July 1836 Cobden produced a pamphlet 'which analysed the Russo-Turkish dispute [.] attempting to play down the Turcophilia that was rife in Britain in the 1830s. In October Co…bden embarked on a long tour, sailing via Lisbon, Gibraltar, and Malta to the eastern end of the Mediterranean, as far as Constantinople, meeting Mehmet Ali in Egypt, before returning via Greece in April 1837.' The present text is the conclusion of the draft manuscript of the account he gave of that meeting and had published in Tait's Edinburgh Magazine in November 1838. 1p, foolscap 8vo. The page is headed '20' and carries ten lines of text, one and a half lines of which are deleted. Lightly aged, worn and creased. On reverse, in pencil, in a contemporary hand: 'Cobden / M. S. S His work in Turkey'. The text reads (with deleted passage in square brackets): 'Often in recurring to my interview with this extraordinary man, [- the spring-like elasticity of whose mind evinces its power in proportion as it is pressed -] and recollecting the eagerness of his enquiries upon practical subjects, - as well as the vehemence of manner with which he sustained his opinions - evincing the spring-like elasticity of mind which manifests its power in proportion as it is pressed - I think with pleasure of the refreshing & animating scene, not unmixed with regret that I shall probably never again have the opportunity of chatting with old Mehemet Ali'. TWO: Slip of paper cut from the beginning of a letter in the third person, with reverse blank. In fair condition, lightly aged. Reads: 'Mr Cobden presents his compliments to Mr Cornwall Lewis, & begs to forward for presentation to the Lords of the Treasury, a memorial'. THREE: Printed form response with thick black border. 1p, 32mo. In fair condition, on discoloured paper. Reads (with manuscript text in square brackets): '[Mr & Mrs Cobden] return thanks for the favor of [Mr Smiths] kind enquiries. / [Midhurst 20 June 1856]'. (The word 'return' has been altered from 'returns'.).

Gene Tunney (1897-1978) was an American professional boxer who gained fame in the 1920s as one of the greatest heavyweights of his era. Born in New York City, Tunney became known for his scientific approach to boxing, combining his tactical intelligence with outstanding footwork and defensive skills. He is most famous for his two victories over Jack Dempsey, the reigning heavyweight champion at the time, particularly their 1927 rematch known as "The Long Count Fight." Tunney's disciplined style and emphasis on strategy over sheer aggression set him apart from many of his contemporaries, earning him the nickname "The Fighting Marine" due to his service in the United States Marine Corps during World War I. After retiring with an impressive record of 65 wins, 1 loss, and 1 draw, Tunney left an indelible mark on the sport and was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 1990, celebrated for his intelligence, sportsmanship, and contributions to the art of boxing. FIRST EDITION, with a folding engraved plate as frontispiece, and a folding engraved plate with 2 maps, uniformly slightly browned, minor soiling, frontispiece foxed and with a short tear (no loss), old fly-leaf at front, defective in the lower outer corner, bearing the ownership inscription of Philip Moore, dated Sept, 2nd, 174…5, pp. vii, 8-256, 8vo, modern leatherette, sound. Not in the NMM Catalogue, although ESTC records NMM as a location. The catalogue does list a group of works 'concerned with the indecisive and unsatisfactory action fought between the English and Franco-Spanish fleets off Toulon on 11 February, 1744. Also concerned with the court-martial and bitter controversy which subsequently arose between the British commander-in-chief, Admiral Thomas Mathews, his deputy, Vice-Admiral Richard Lestock and their subordinates. The dispute gave rise to a remarkable series of pamphlets.' ODNB (entry for Lestock) characterises the action more brutally as 'a monumental naval failure.' Besides the NMM copy ESTC locates copies in BL, Bodleian, National Trust and Trinity College, and just NYPL in the US. (ESTC T64264).
