In den WarenkorbCloth. Zustand: Very Good. None (illustrator). First edition. The first edition of this report by leading hydrologist and namesake of the 'Hurst Exponent', Harold Edwin Hurst. An important work in the field of hydrology and regarding the river Nile. With fascinating provenance. From the library of Frederic Newhouse (1883-1969), was a sometime inspector-general of Egyptian irrigation in the Sudan. This title was published as a part of a series of reports commissioned by the 'Ministry of Public Works, Egypt'. The Egyptian Department of Public works was established in the early 19th century and concentrated on works relating to irrigation and hydraulic engineering. It became the most respected engineering entity and regarded as a fantastic school for civil engineers in modern Egypt. This work was issued during the British Occupation Period and is number 24 of the 'Physical Department Paper'. Co-written by Harold Edwin Hurst and D A F Watt. Hurst was a British hydrologist from Leicester. He produced several studies on the long-term storage capacity of reservoirs and of the fluctuation in water level in the Nile. He worked in Egypt for 62 years and was heavily involved in the new Aswan High Dam project, which was built using his plan. D A F Watt was a resident engineer at the Aswan Reservoir. This technical study charts tables of the discharge of sluices as well as outlining four methods to measure discharge of the Nile. Hurst presents the results of these methods, which includes a wide range of data. The minister of public works at the time, Ibrahim Fahmy, prefaces this work by stating that 'the present report marks to the conclusion of a piece of work of great importance to Egypt which has extended over more than twenty years'. With four plates to the rear of the work, comprising of one photograph and three plans. An interesting and important study on the Nile and the irrigation development during the British occupation. In a quarter cloth binding with paper covered boards. Externally, generally smart. Boards have faded, and have light scattered spots. Prior owner's inscription to the front board, F Newhouse No A F 4/3. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean. Very Good. book.
