Grantham was a German-born, Cambridge-educated pacifist and feminist poet; she lost both a husband and two sons in Europe's two great wars. Following the death of her first husband, she remarried Johan Munthe, a Norwegian employed by the Chinese Maritime Customs Service. Grantham and Munthe resided in Peking for over 15 years.
