Pierre-Victor-Adolphe Auvard (name sometimes given as Pierre-Victor Alfred Auvard in medical literature); (1855-1941) was a French obstetrician and gynecologist born in the department of Corrèze. He studied medicine in Paris, and in 1879 became interne des hôpitaux. In 1882 he furthered his studies in Germany (Leipzig, Dresden, Berlin), and in 1884 received his doctorate with a thesis titled De la Pince à Os et du Cranioclaste. uring the 1880s, he introduced the "Auvard couveuse", an inexpensive incubator that became widely popular in the latter part of the 19th century. Other eponyms in the field of obstetrics that bear his name are: "Auvard maneuver" - a procedure for extraction of the placenta; "Auvard's vaginal speculum", and "Auvard's basiotribe" - an instrument that is a combination of a craniotomy forceps and a cranioclast. The three volumes for sale (complete) contain a collection of his works and studies. The text is in French. All thre volumes contain numerous illustrations and diagrams. The books are ex-library but with very few library marks other than a label with 'withdrawn' stamp overprinted on the front free endpaper of each volume. There is a mark in ink by the Auvard's name on the title page in volumes 1 and 3. The cases of the three volumes are in a similar condition with shelf wear on the boards and damage and some loss to the leather on the spines and corner tips. The leather on the spine edges is split on all volumes and the boards are now loosely held in place by the cords. The leather suffers from red rot on parts of the spine and corners. Parts of the spines are missing at both ends and the bottom panel is missing from volume 3 and the fifth panel down is missing from volume 2. Small pieces are missing from the title labels. The contents are tight and the pages are clean with slight browning around the edges. Volume 1 suffers from some foxing. This is mostly light to moderate although a few pages are more heavily affected. The endpapers of volumes 1 and 2 are split down the spine gutter and the endpapers have some stains and soilng. The front free endpapers in the three volumes have and inscription dated dated 1943. There is a signed inscription by Auvard on the half-title page in the first volume "Hommage de l'auteur A. Auvard 58 Rue La ???????". PLEASE NOTE: These are heavy volumes and extra postage costs may be incurred. Inscribed and Signed by Author.
