Le BCG est le vaccin le plus utilisé dans le monde ; il s'est révélé efficace non seulement pour prévenir la tuberculose mais aussi pour stimuler une réponse immunitaire antitumorale (immunothérapie par instillation intravésicale dans les cancers superficiels de la vessie) et sans doute offrir une protection contre diverses infections non mycobactériennes.
