Presentation copy with manuscript note from the author to the Zoological Society of London, noting that he had been a 'membre étranger' since 1832. The note is affixed to verso of half-title and is signed and dated 11th April 1860. Text French. The French zoologist André Marie Constant Duméril (1774-1860) was professor of anatomy at the Muséum National d'Histoire Naturelle, Paris and later became professor of herpetology and ichthyology. He published a number of important zoological works including: 'Zoologie analytique' (1806), and the monumental nine volume work 'l'Erpétologie générale ou Histoire naturelle complète des reptiles' (1834-1854). This work, 'Entomologie analytique', illustrated with many attractive wood engravings of insect specimens throughout the text, was his main entomolical work. The first volume provides a general introduction to insects and the Coleoptera. The second includes the Orthoptera, Neuroptera, Hymenoptera, Hemiptera, Lepidoptera, Diptera and other insect orders.Published in the 'Mémoires de l'Academie des Sciences de l'Institute Imperial de France' Tome XXXI.Horn-Schenkling 5555.…

Spine with printed label. = Important new classification of the fishes and, as such, an improvement of the system introduced by Cuvier and expanded and modified by De Lacépède. Published as the Academy's Mémoires, tome 27(1). Uncut, unopened. Boards worn at edges; shelf-wear to spine and label, with some abrasion; spine with a closed tear. A few leaf edges, being uncut, soiled, a few leaves at the beginning and end a bit spotted, as often; otherwise, in near mint condition. The rarely recorded large table fine. Dean I, p. 339.…

Lithographed portrait of the author loosely inserted. Contemporary quarter calf over green boards. Spine with two red labels with gilt title and date. Marbled endpapers; speckled edges. = A huge and uncommon compilation on the classification and history of insects and the most important treatise in this field from this period. Written by the French zoologist, principally ichthyologist, herpetologist and entomologist, André Marie Constant Duméril (1774-1860). Each genus is represented by a figured species and the etymology of the zoological names is explained. The work ends with an index. On offer is a well-bound complete copy, published as Volume 31 of the Académie's Mémoires (originally published in two parts). The portrait, with facsimile autograph of the author shows Duméril at an old age. The author died in the year of publication. This portrait is probably from another source, but matches the size of the book block and forms a nice addition indeed. Short tear in the folding table; otherwise very good, clean. In transparent sleeve. = This copy was presented to the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia by William MacClure, one of its founding members, as acknowledged by a printed label on the front paste-down. The naturalist, cartographer and "father of American geology" MacClure (1763-1840) went to New Harmony, Indiana, with other noted naturalists, such as Thomas Say ("father of American entomology and malacology"), David Dale Owen, Charles-Alexandre Lesueur, and several others, in pursuit of a new, Utopian life of happiness, enlightenment, and prosperity through education, science, technology, and communal living. Written by the French zoologist, and principally ichthyologist, herpetologist and entomologist, André Marie Constant Duméril (1774-1860), this work is of taxonomic importance as he introduced new taxa. The plates are of a very high quality, being drawn by Prêtre under the direction of Turpin. The great Swiss-born French natural history artist Jean Gabriel Prêtre (1768-1849) was, arguably, one of the best French natural history illustrators of the 19th century. He illustrated several of the most important and beautiful travel, exploration and natural history publications, including works by Ramon de la Sagra, Alcide d'Orbigny, Paul Deshayes, Frédéric Cuvier, Antoine Risso, René Primevère Lesson, André Duméril, Isidore Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire, and others. Several bird species and a lizard were named after him. Pierre Jean François Turpin (1775-1840)was a French botanist and natural history illustrator. Spine cover with some chips; the top outer corner of most plates with a circular water-stain, on a few plates just reaching printed images. Text rather foxed. Title page, 40 pp. In contemporary paper sleeve with script title. = The thesis of the French zoologist, and principally ichthyologist, herpetologist and entomologist, André Marie Constant Duméril (1774-1860). Among the 'juges' were Desfontaines, Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire, Brongniart, Latreille, and Lamarck. Duméril passed the exam. The work deals with so-called Cyclostomata, or lampreys and hagfishes. On the title page the small stamp of the herpetologist and ichthyologist Léon Louis Vaillant (1834-1914). Some spotting to the front wrapper, the protective sleeve (not part of the work) with marginal tears an creases and one corner missing. A very good copy. Exceedingly rare, we could not trace any copy ever coming to auction nor in the trade before. Dean I, p. 339. …
