Featuring poetry, essays, etc., including an essay on the art of Pablo Picasso, accompanied by several line drawings by Picasso. GOOD condition. Minor to moderate soiling and toning to the covers, with some staining. Extremities scuffed and worn. Spine creased, chipped, torn and worn. Lower rear corner of the rear cover and last few pages torn and MISSING 1-2 inches at the corner, affecting text of ads.

The two new works are the deluxe editions of the 1983 catalogue raisonné. The rich publication reproduced each work in the exact size and chronological order of the original drawings, so as to preserve the integrity of the suite. Tériade remarked that this collection of drawings was Picasso's "finest, boldest, [and] most poignantly human of all he has produced in the course of his long and brilliant career" (E. Tériade, ed., op. cit., n.p.).At the time Picasso began this series in November 1953, Françoise Gilot had just deserted him, taking their two children with her and leaving him alone as an abandoned man. Deeply hurt, he shut himself away in his vacant villa in Vallauris and frantically produced the 180 drawings which represent ". the diary, not verbal but visual, of a detestable 'season in hell,' a crisis in his personal life which led him to question everything." Portfolio slightly soiled; 2 pages of the index and colophon defective.Cramer, no. 88.Picasso signed the limitation page which contains a portrait of a faun by Picasso and is a lithographic reproduction of a drawing by Pablo Picasso. The craftsman that reproduced the drawing by hand was Henri Deschamps, Picasso's favorite and most trusted master printer at the Mourlot Studio. He relied on Deschamps any time that a painting or drawing had to be reproduced and it was not an already original print. They collaborated very closely from 1945 until the death of the artist in 1973.This small lithograph is an "after" as it was reproduced by a craftsman while the artist was alive and had to be supervised and approved by the artist himself. In the case, this beautiful little gem of a lithograph was created for the book: Dans L'atelier de Picasso - which was written by Picasso's secretary and close friend Sabartes and published and printed by Editions Mourlot. It included 13 original lithographs and dozens of reproductions of paintings and drawings. Each book was signed by Picasso on the justification page in red Pencil. However, none of the lithographs inside were ever signed.

Of these, 2000 were numbered 1-2,000: this copy is numbered 417, and signed by the author. Bound in straw-coloured, roughly woven hessian that was specially made for this edition. Printed on 'papel Picasso' - used here for the first time - made with double watermarks, a sun and a sheaf (or a bunch of flowers loosely bound with a ribbon , both designed by Picasso.

The final work printed by The Cresset Press, an independent press from 1927 for 40 years, and initially specialising in expensively illustrated limited editions of classical works, going on to produce well-designed trade editions of literary and political works. Milton's Paradise Lost is thought by many to be its finest work, and printed by Bernard Newdigate at the Shakespeare Head Press. With twenty wood-engravings by Demetrios Galanis (16 full-page, plus head and tail pieces in each volume) and the title-page and initial letters by Anna Simons. From the second edition, revised and augmented by the Author, printed at London by S. Simmons in 1674. Paradise Lost concerns the biblical story of the Fall of Man: the temptation of Adam and Eve by the fallen angel Satan and their expulsion from the Garden of Eden. Milton's purpose, stated in Book I, is to "justify the ways of God to men". Paradise Regained is a poem, first published in 1671, which is connected by name to his earlier and more famous epic poem Paradise Lost, with which it shares similar theological themes; indeed, its title, its use of blank verse, and its progression through Christian history recall the earlier work. However, this effort deals primarily with the temptation of Christ as recounted in the Gospel of Luke.
