This 'new edition' of Vol 3. is in fact the first and only appearance in print (London) and supplements the 2 vols of Essays (first published 1796-7). There was a fourth volume published in 1812 (essays 16-18). In these essays (10-15) Rumford turns his attention to kitchens and cooking where, along with essays on warm rooms, warm bathing etc, he demonstrates his observation and theories on heat and heating. ESTC T148699. aeg, some foxing, mainly to to foredges, marbled eps. good tight copy in full straight grained red morocco, extremities worn, boards a little scuffed, corners lightly bumped but good. Although marked Volume I, this was the only volume published under this title. Cloth. Contains various papers including Experiments on Gunpowder, Experiments made with Cannon and some attempts to improve Field Artillery, Experiments on Production of Air from Water, Intensities of Light emitted by Luminous Bodies, Experiments on Coloured Shadows, Conjectures respecting the Principles of the Harmony of Colours, Enquiry concerning Chemical Properties attributed to Light, etc. Thompson was well known for his technological innovation, and he studied gunpowder and illumination throughout his life. (DSB) In 1798 the same publisher issued a collection of Rumford's works called "Essays Political Economical and Philosophical" but we are unclear how much overlap there is in content. Under this title, this is the only volume issued.

In den WarenkorbFrontispiece portrait, 13 engraved plates, 12 folding; xxiv+390pp. 8vo contemp. calf, spine gilt, front cover detached, Sir Benjamin Thompson, Count Rumford of the Holy Roman Empire [1753-1814] natural philosopher and philanthropist, was born at North Woburn, Massachusetts. In the War of Independence, he remained loyal to the British and raised a regiment , the King's American Dragoons. In 1785, at the request of Elector Karl Theodor of Bavaria, he left England and settled in Munich. This volume of thirteen papers is dedicated to Elector Maximilian Joseph. The major part of the book are accounts of experiments on gun-powder and cannon, lifetime interests of Rumford. One paper is on the absorption of moisture in different clothing materials.The portrait is a stipple engraving, head and shoulders, to left, oval, in uniform, after Kellerhofen, by Joseph Rauschmayr. This engraving is not in the British Museum or NPG.

Bland, and Anne Willan. Very good. This is an early text on the kitchen and all heating implements relating to equipping the room for usage. Rumford, the noted physicist and inventor, describes kitchen fire-places, the roaster, dripping-pan, heating an iron oven, construction of boilers, steam cooking, warming rooms, saucepan heaters, portable furnaces, tea-kettles (p.301), kitchen utensils for the poor, "account of a concealed kitchen," chimneys, warm bathing, management of fires, use of steam as a vehicle for transporting heat, etc. Thompson is known also as the inventor of the coffee percolator (1806/1812), published in a later volume. PROVENANCE: Anne Willan (born 1938) is a recognized authority on French cooking, with more than 35 years of experience as a cooking teacher, cookbook author and food columnist. She is the founder of the prestigious Ecole de Cuisine La Varenne, which operated in Burgundy France from 1991 until 2007.

Auflage bereits 1800 in London aufgrund seiner praktischen Hilfestellung bei der Einrichtung von Großküchen und Verbesserung von Massenverpflegung mit handfesten Rezepten sowie Wareneinkauf und Umgang mit Energiekosten, jeweils von ausführlich dargestellten Experimenten begleitet.
