In publisher's dust jacket with crossed flags on front panel, retail price on front flap, small closed tear and crease on bottom edge of back panel, light fading along spine. Overall a very good example of this original history of an all-German New York regiment in the Civil War.

8vo Fine copy. Very scarce Printed by lithography on japon, the eleven text pages with richly coloured and decorated initials and borders in the manner of an illuminated manuscript. While Dreyfus, McKitterick and Rendall state that the book was "only supervised in its technical production" by Francis Meynell, we feel sure that he must have designed the binding, so strongly reminiscent of his own edition of Beedome issued in the following year. Full limp vellum with leather thongs, title within flourished cartouche in gilt on upper cover.

Housed in publisher's blue cloth slipcase, lined in felt. Previous ownership inscription on second free endpaper. This is copy #1 of 500, and the only known copy bound in full morocco.
