He was able to include the Royal Academy, Van Gogh and Gaugin among his admirers. He frequently drew humorous drawings of fashionable society and this contribution is included here. The humour is ironic, satirical and although ascerbic, never unkind. The book has, at some stage, been rebound. This cover is grubby and worn. It has some buckling. Nonetheless it is secure. The front cover has the title inscribed upon it. The contents, taking their age into account, are in fair and genial condition. Stamp of previous owner General Julius Klein on fep. Julius Klein (1901-1984) was an American journalist, spy, business executive and Army general. Klein was born in Chicago in 1901. He was interned by German authorities during World War I, but escaped to France and joined the U.S. Army as a spy. After serving as a spy in Germany in WWI, Klein began his career in the 1920s as a criminal reporter for The State Herald, and initiated the first German language radio broadcasts in the United States. Klein also originated the South Pacific edition of The Stars and Stripes military newspaper. In 1933 Klein joined the Illinois National Guard, becoming a lieutenant colonel in 1941. He formulated the Combat Public Relations plan dealing with psychological warfare and propaganda . During this time Klein conducted domestic intelligence operations authorized by both Illinois governor Henry Horner and Colonel (later General) George C. Marshall. Over the years, Klein had built a relationship with German Consul Georg Gyssling, which continued until Gyssling was recalled to Germany in 1941. Klein's letter of commendation was one of the factors that saved Gyssling from being convicted as a war criminal. On 20 July 1944, Claus von Stauffenberg and other conspirators attempted to assassinate Adolf Hitler, Führer of Nazi Germany, inside his Wolf's Lair field headquarters near Rastenburg, East Prussia. The name Operation Valkyrieâ"originally referring to part of the conspiracyâ"has become associated with the entire event. The apparent aim of the assassination attempt was to wrest political control of Germany and its armed forces from the Nazi Party (including the SS) and to make peace with the Western Allies as soon as possible. The details of the conspirators' peace initiatives remain unknown, but they would have included unrealistic demands for the confirmation of Germany's extensive annexations of European territory. The plot was the culmination of efforts by several groups in the German resistance to overthrow the Nazi German government. Over the following weeks, Himmler's Gestapo, driven by a furious Hitler, rounded up nearly everyone who had the remotest connection with the plot. The discovery of letters and diaries in the homes and offices of those arrested revealed the plots of 1938, 1939, and 1943, and this led to further rounds of arrests, including that of colonel general Franz Halder, who finished the war in a concentration camp. Under Himmler's new Sippenhaft (blood guilt) laws, many relatives of the principal plotters were also arrested in the immediate aftermath of the failed plot. The failure of the assassination attempt and the intended military coup d'état that was to follow led the Gestapo to arrest more than 7,000 people, of whom they executed 4,980. Often credited as a founder of modern "liberal" thought, Locke pioneered the ideas of natural law, social contract, religious toleration, and the right to revolution that proved essential to both the American Revolution and the U.S. Constitution that followed. Six substantial pieces compiled by Locke's literary executors, Peter King and Anthony Collins, with Locke's instructions. Contents are: (1) The Conduct of Understanding, (2) An Examination of P. Malebranche's Opinion., (3) A Discourse on Miracles, (4) Part of a Fourth Letter on Toleration, (5) Memoirs Relating to the Life of Anthony, First Earl of Shaftesbury, and (6) Locke's ingenious New Method of a Common-Place-Book. The latter first appeared in French in 1686 in the Bibliothèque Universelle, and Shaftesbury's memoirs also first appeared in French (1705 in Bibliothèque Choisie). Those two make their first English appearance here, and it is the first appearances in print for the other four. Locke's "Of the Conduct of the Understanding" was especially popular and was reprinted numerous times. It was intended as a later addition to his Essay Concerning Human Understanding, but Locke was unable to incorporate this in a later edition before his death. OCLC: 367557024. In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: Good. No Jacket. The most complete edition of this innovative manual by a British cavalry officer who was a follower of the French school, and a personal friend of Bourgelat. Based on ten years' army experience, Herbert (1734-94) wrote this handbook aiming to improve current standards of horsemanship by developing a totally practical method of gradual and patient training. It contains a few general rules absolutely necessary for cavalry discipline. His precepts for shoeing are especially praised by Mennessier, who discusses them in detail. Horses are taught to jump and swim, and to obey oral commands in case reins are not available. The book had immediate success, and Herbert's ideas were adopted by the British cavalry. Third edition, with the text revised by the author, containing the additional chapter on the trot. This edition is especially attractive for being illustrated with a total of 17 plates (the first edition (1761) contained 2 plates only, the second edition (1762) had 3 plates). The text was translated into French by Bergeret de Frouville, and the chapter on the trot was plagiarized in the English translation of Bourgelat's Le Nouveau Newcastle. Blank top corners of first leaves with light traces of waterstaining, a few traces of usage, otherwise a good copy with early ownership signature of Thomas D. Broad, 2 Henrietta Street, Bath, who has added a neat manuscript index of the plates on the otherwise blank page facing first page of text. Lewine 406; Mennessier de la Lance I,111; Wells 5695.

1st edition, with dust jacket (illustrator). First Edition. 1st edition, with dust jacket. With Darrow's Signature and Uncommon Book Label Darrow, Clarence [1857-1938]. The Story of My Life. New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1932. viii, [iv], 465 pp. 14 plates (with 16 illustrations). Cloth very good in edgeworn, creased and lightly soiled dust jacket. Leather 2-1/2" x 3/4" (6.35 x 2 cm) spine label reading "C.S. Darrow" affixed to front pastedown, Darrow signature to half-title in bold hand. $2,000. * First edition (Scribner "A," blue cloth). A curious feature of this copy is the label affixed to the front pastedown. It is not a bookplate; it appears to be a lawyer's spine label, this one from Darrow's office. The label was likely applied by Darrow himself: "Darrow's almost invariable practice was to affix his bookplate to the top left-hand corner of the book's front pastedown.Darrow also signed his books, sometimes in conjunction with his bookplate or bookstamp, sometimes not" (Luttrell). Darrow's label is less commonly seen than his bookplate or ownership stamps, and books with it are scarce. Darrow's Story of My Life is one of the great autobiographies of the twentieth century. When Darrow died in 1938 at the age of 81, few disputed that he was one of the great attorneys and public intellectuals of his day. There were other lawyers in his lifetime who contributed more to the development of legal science, who rose to positions of greater influence, or who won larger financial rewards, but perhaps none who could match his record as a crusader for the common man. Luttrell, "Clarence Darrow and the Books in His Life," AB Bookman, April 24, 1995. Signed.

1st Edition. Very good. Original card folder. Size 20.5 x 14.25 Inches. A radiantly rich chromolithograph 1904 first edition bird's-eye view style pocket map of New England issued by John Jenness Lane and George Walker for the New England Street Railway Club. The view was produced upon Lane's election as secretary of the Club to promote the extensive but ephemeral New England streetcar network. It is the first such image, combining trolley lines with a bird's-eye perspective, but inspired others, including similar images of the New York area, Long Island, the Mid-Atlantic States, and the vicinity of Chicago. A Closer Look Centered on Boston, New England's streetcar system is revealed extending north as far as Lewistown, Brunswick and Yarmouth, Maine; south to Narragansett Bay, Newport and New Bedford, Massachusetts; and west as far as Worcester. Both electric railroads and steam railroads are noted here, with red lines indicating an electric railroad and a black line marking the route of a steam railroad. Various parks, lighthouses, historic sites, and geographical features are also labeled. Popular routes are highlighted by inset maps and include: Springfield-Turners Falls, Worcester-Springfield, Springfield-New York City, Pittsfield and Vicinity, Rochester-Nashua, Portsmouth-Lewiston, and a triangle route from Worchester to Providence to New London and back. An inset of the vicinity of Boston is situated in the upper left. Interurban Streetcars At the end of the 19th century, New England was serviced by an extensive network of interurban electric and steam powered streetcars. These were not proper railroads, but rather a separate system, run by various competing companies, that extended from New York to Boston, and throughout New England as far north as Bath and Lewiston, Maine. By 1919, most of the interurban streetcar lines were consolidated under the Shore Line Electric Railway. The rise of the automobile ushered in the end of streetcar travel by 1940. Chromolithography Chromolithography is a color lithographic technique developed in the mid-19th century. The process involved using multiple lithographic stones, one for each color, to yield a rich composite effect. Oftentimes, the process would start with a black basecoat upon which subsequent colors were layered. Some chromolithographs used 30 or more separate lithographic stones to achieve the desired effect. Chromolithograph color could also be effectively blended for even more dramatic effects. The process became extremely popular in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, when it emerged as the dominate method of color printing Publication History and Census This map was created by John Jenness Lane who contracted its production to George H. Walker of behalf of the New England Street Railway Club. The first edition, offered here, appeared in 1904 and is recognizable for exceptionally high production values with rich, vivid multi-color chromolithography. Subsequent editions, issued from 1905 to 1909, exhibit gradually less color, with some later editions issued only in black and red. The 1905 edition is the most common, but subsequent updated editions appeared annually. We have identified no institutional holdings of this, the 1904 first edition, despite a ghost reference (wherein no institutional holdings are identified) in OCLC. We have handled three previous examples of the 1904 first edition. References: OCLC 166638270.

1st Edition. Very good. Generous margins. Minor corner reinstatement upper right - limited out outer margin. Size 15 x 16 Inches. This is the first edition, first state of Gerard Mercator's seminal 1595 map of the Arctic, the great cartographer's most interesting and important atlas map. In this first edition, it is the scarcest of Mercator's atlas maps and a holy grail for any Arctic collector. For all its flaws and inaccuracies, it is a schematized interpretation of factual voyages between Norway, England, Iceland, Greenland, and Labrador (Markland). Context of this Polar Projection Mercator's Arctic projection has its roots in a magnificent 1569 wall map of the world in which Mercator first introduces his revolutionary projection. The difficulty with the Mercator Projection is that it dramatically inflates the appearance of size it draws near to the poles: its application to the polar regions themselves would result in an infinitely tall map. Mercator therefore included a polar projection, very similar to the map shown here, in the lower-left corner of his wall map. Mercator produced the present map, expanded and updated from his wall map, for inclusion in the first edition of his Atlas , published posthumously in 1595. As such, it is the first specific separate map of the Arctic. Taking it from the Top At the North Pole, Mercator depicts a large black rock, the Rupes Nigra , surrounded by a great whirlpool fed by four powerful rivers - 'the Indrawing Seas'. These divide a massive continent-sized landmass into four distinct islands. When the English polymath John Dee wrote to Mercator asking about his sources for this map, Mercator returned the following letter which survives in his own hand (April 20, 1577, British Library): In the midst of the four countries is a Whirl-pool, into which there empty these four indrawing Seas which divide the North. And the water rushes round and descends into the Earth just as if one were pouring it through a filter funnel. It is four degrees wide on every side of the Pole, that is to say eight degrees altogether. Except that right under the Pole there lies a bare Rock in the midst of the Sea. Its circumference is almost 33 French miles, and it is all of magnetic Stone () This is word for word everything that I copied out of this author years ago. The author to which Mercator referred is the Dutch traveler Jacobus Cnoyen van Tsertoghenbosche, whose report combined firsthand encounters with interpretations of an enigmatic lost work, the Inventio Fortunata (Fortunate Discoveries). This 14th century work, now largely forgotten, was a well-known resource for cartographers of the 15th and 16th centuries. The mysterious author may have been Nicholas of Lynn, Thomas Kingsbury, or Hugh of Ireland. The work told of a Minorite monk from Oxford who traveled extensively in northern lands, including Iceland, Greenland, Norway, and possibly even Labrador. The Inventio also cited far older lost works, the Principio Gestorum Arturi and the Leges Anglorum Londoniis Collectae , which contributed a chapter to the legend of King Arthur, casting him as a 6th century Arctic explorer, and describing Arthurian conquests of Iceland, Greenland, the Faeroes, parts of Norway, and even the North Pole. King Arthur - Arctic Explorer The Inventio described Arthur's invading Arctic army as consisting of some 4000 men on 12 ships. He sent the army into one of these 'indrawing seas', apparently the only way to bypass the 'Encircling Arctic Mountains'. According to John Dee, in Arthur's time there were cities lying beyond those mountains. Perhaps unsurprisingly, no further report of this momentous invasion appears in Arthurian record. In the fourteenth century, at the court of King Håkan Magnusson (1340 - 1380) in Norway, Cnoyen met and interviewed eight travelers from northern regions. One, a priest, even carried an astrolabe. Historian E. G. Taylor ('A letter dated 1577 from Mercator to John Dee.' Imago Mundi 13:5668) believed Cnoy.
