In it a Master Bee Keeper, his bees, and the natural beauty of California restore a wounded World War I veteran to health. ; Geneva Grace Stratton was born on a farm in Wabash County, Indiana in 1863. Stratton attended public schools. At an early age she roamed the countryside and developed a lively interest in nature and wildlife. In 1874 the family moved to the city of Wabash. She stayed in school until she was almost twenty, but did not receive a high school diploma. After an accident Stratton met during her recovery Charles Darwin Porter, a pharmacist from Geneva. He was 13 years her senior, but they were married in 1886. After oil was discovered on some farmland Mr. Porter owned, the Porters built a large house on the edge of the Limberlost swamp, a natural preserve for wild plants, moths, and birds. Stratton-Porter began to photograph birds and animals of the Swamp. Her early photographs appeared in the magazines Recreation and Outing. In 1901 she published her first piece of fiction in Metropolitan magazine. Stratton-Porter made her debut with The Song of the Cardinal. The next story, Freckles, about an orphan who gets a job as a timber guard in Limberlost, became a success. The book was made into a film in 1935 and 1960. During World War I Stratton-Porter moved to California. She wrote editorials for McCall's magazine and founded in 1922 Gene Stratton Porter film company to produce movies of her books. Stratton-Porter died on December 6, 1924, in Los Angeles, from injuries following a traffic accident when her limousine was hit by a trolley car. She was buried in Hollywood Cemetery in California. Her book, The Keeper of the Bees was posthumously published. The pre-publication artist's design copy, predating the first edition and unique. Written and illustrated by the Austrian-American creator of the internationally beloved "Madeline" children's series, this copy of "Parsley" shows the final stages of the book design process. Each piece of text and each illustration has been cut and pasted into place on a blank full-sized model of the first printed edition, dictating the final layout of the work. The artist himself was likely involved in the creation of this pre-publication design copy, as it was gifted by Bemelmans personally to the fellow émigré Felix Guggenheim (1904-76), the German-born literary agent and publisher who set up the "Pazifische Presse" (Pacific Press) in Los Angeles. - Ludwig Bemelmans emigrated to the United States as a child, and eventually took up work at hotels, alongside a stint in the U.S. Army during WWI. In his spare time, however, he worked as a cartoonist, and finally as a children's book illustrator. His first great success came with "Madeline" in 1939, but he also published novels and further children's books, such as "Parsley", a picture book about a pine tree and an elderly stag who team up to defeat a hunter. - A few small closed tears and minor chips to jacket, repaired; hints of glue marks where illustrations and text are pasted in; small spot of foxing on title page. Sie sind eingezogen und kommen überhaupt nicht zur Ausübung Ihrer berufl. Tätigkeit") und ein Illustrationsprojekt: "Turul macht mir sehr viel Freude und ich hoffe Ihnen das gesamte Material in zirka 20 Tagen zugehen lassen zu können". - Ende 1939 dankt er dafür, "dass ich mir je einen Abzug von den Turul-Illustrationen behalten darf". - Bietet Keller an, ihm einige Bilder zu übersenden, von denen er sich eines aussuchen und dafür als Dankeszeichen nur einen Freundschaftspreis zu zahlen brauche: "Erstaunt bin ich immer wieder, wie Sie bisher meine Arbeiten verfolgen und finde Ihr Interesse daran sehr lieb [.] Sie haben mich durch Ihre neuerliche Empfehlung beim Verlag abermals verbunden". - Die Erwähnung der Illustrationen zu Josef Bieniasz' Bärengeschichte "Turul" korrigiert die Entstehung der Arbeiten um ein Jahrzehnt.
