Extraordinarily productive American journalist and humorist who published dozens of books and hundreds of short stories in the first half of the twentieth century. Superb content ALS, 1p, 8½" X 11", Santa Monica, CA, 28 May 1941. Addressed to Arnold F. Gates (1914-93, noted Lincoln/Civil War scholar). Very good. Lightly age toned. On imprinted letterhead, Cobb thanks an admirer for kind words regarding his 1941 autobiography "Exit Laughing." He pens in his large, sprawling script: "Thank you, suh! I'm glad you liked 'Exit Laughing' -- and glad you told me so. The book is selling very well indeed -- except among confirmed New Dealers who still bear a grudge because I declined to support their Socialist-Labor-Communistic, life-insurance-providing government last fall." Signed in full. Though a Democrat, Conn grew dissatisfied with President Franklin Roosevelt and the New Deal. By 1940 he had joined the anti-FDR "No Third Term" movement and supported Republican candidate Wendell Willkie. A fascinating example of Cobb's shifting political beliefs.
