LCCN: 58-14339 ; LC: GV1445; Dewey: 794.1 ; OCLC: 45271009 ; black and white photogrpahic stiff paper wrappers; "The last revised edition of the most famous general study of chess ever written. Prepared by an early twentieth-century master, it was designed to teach the beginner and the intermediate player just about everything he needed to know about openings, middle game, and end game. It has never been superseded as the most practical and easily followed book of its sort. It is unusual in presenting both ideas and actual moves (taken from master play) in the most easily assimilated form. Revised and brought up to date by Fred Reinfeld and Sidney Bernstein, this book explains and makes easy for you more than 90 different openings, ranging from the classical Ruy Lopez up to the work of Alekhine, Reti, Nimzovich, and others. Combinations are analyzed and presented so clearly (yet without sacrificing depth) that you will soon find yourself seeing moves ahead more clearly than you did before. You will learn how to plan your game with a purpose, how to attack, sacrifice, defend, exchange, and govern your general strategy. Endings are also thoroughly covered. All in all, there is not an aspect of practical chess that is not treated, and there is hardly a player living below the rank of grandmaster who could not profit form Mason's work. If you follow Mason's exposition thoroughly, you will probably obtain as much knowledge of chess as you could short of making chess a full-time study for years. Bound in with Mason's Art of Chess is an entirely new booklet by Fred Reinfeld, How Do You Play Chess? In this booklet, Mr. Reinfeld uses lively questions and answers to tell novices of the basic fundamentals of the game." ' ; Fred Reinfeld (1910-1964) was for many years among the strongest chess players in the country. Even now as an author, he stands alone, one of the most successful and prolific chess writer of all time, with over one hundred books to his credit. ;slight wear, crease on front cover corner ; marks in the bibliography, else VG. He was the foremost figure amongst the hypermoderns. Born in part of the Russian Empire, the Jewish German-speaking Nimzowitsch came from a wealthy family, where he learned chess from his father, who was a merchant. In 1904, he travelled to Berlin to study philosophy, but set aside his studies soon and began a career as a professional chess player that same year. He won his first international tournament at Munich 1906.[3] Then, he tied for first with Alexander Alekhine at Saint Petersburg 1913/14 (the eighth All-Russian Masters' Tournament). During the 1917 Russian Revolution, Nimzowitsch was in the Baltic war zone. He escaped being drafted into one of the armies by feigning madness, insisting that a fly was on his head. He then escaped to Berlin, and gave his first name as Arnold, possibly to avoid anti-Semitic persecution. Nimzowitsch eventually moved to Copenhagen in 1922,[5] which coincided with his rise to the world chess elite, where he lived for the rest of his life in one small rented room.[6] In Copenhagen, he twice won the Nordic Chess Championship, in 1924 and 1934. He obtained Danish citizenship and lived in Denmark until his death in 1935." ; FINE. Book.

A letter of condolence on the death of Aitken's father. Reminisces about the 'moment I came into his life', a 'luncheon at Charkley' soon after the First World War: 'The only other guest was Augustus John. [.] as you know, I learnt much from him. Indeed, it was he who taught me how to write, and in his house I met numerous people whom, but for him, I should never have known.' He considers that Beaverbrook treated him 'nobly'. He will keep the last letter he received from Beaverbrook: 'It was an original letter and, as you know, he always wanted originality in every writer and newspaper correspondent'. Beaverbrook was 'a very great and generous man' and Lockhart feels sure that his son 'will follow in his steps'. He hopes to see him, but is 'too old now to come often to London. I wish you a great future.'.

4to. 2 pp. To the Parisian gallerist Jean Larcarde, announcing a "sample of prose" by his daughter that is written on the reverse in Chaissac's hand. Verso, Chaissac writes a long and digressive introduction, explaining that his wife taught their daughter how to write, following the example of Chaissac's sister, who had an important role in his education and "took the trouble to destroy in" Chaissac "the defective or local pronunciation" and influenced his taste in reading. He then talks about his sister's marriage into "a family of 'local-minded semi-idlers'", describing her husband as "the equivalent to the hats" that his sister "had worn in her youth" and alluding to conflicts with her mother-in-law and the unhappiness of her husband. - The equally curious story attributed to his daughter Annie Gaston-Chaissac tells of a dream of "The little chimney sweeper" who turns out to be a tinker (French: rétamour instead of ramoneur). The tinker sets up shop "in an unpacking crate", taking what other people throw out, "only eats snails". In the end he receives "a jug and 1000 francs" and happily buys a "real wagon". - Traces of folds. Somewhat creased.
