Date is an approximation as the last book listed on the page before the frontispiece headed Classics New and Old For Children is THE AESOP FOR CHILDREN (1919) and the gift inscription is dated 1924. Just a delightful book of rhymes stunningly illustrated by Wright and Winter. Professor Leroy Freeman Jackson (1881-1958), was born in London, Ontario, Canada, and moved with his family to North Dakota in the early 1890s. Jackson received his bachelors degree in 1902 and his masters degree from the University of Chicago in 1909. Iin 1912 he went to Harvard for a year to conduct research under Frederick Jackson Turner. After several years of holding teaching positions throughout North Dakota and Minnesota, Jackson began teaching at the State College of Washington in Pullman, where he ultimately became acting Head of the Social Science Division. His teaching career was put on hold during World War I, when in 1917, Jackson went overseas to serve as first lieutenant in the Coast Artillery Corps. He later served with the Army Educational Corps as the conductor of the Citizenship Institutes. In 1921 he moved to Burnsville, North Carolina, to become director of the Stanley McCormick School (which later became the Carolina New College), an experimental progressive education school funded by Nettie Fowler McCormick. When the school closed down in 1928, Jackson became Dean of the College of the City of Asheville in North Carolina. Jackson went to work for the United States Indian Service in 1932 and would spend the next four years working with Native American students. The Indian Service first sent him to Alaska to be the director of the newly established Wrangell Institute, which included students from the Tlingit and Yakama tribes. In 1934, Jackson was sent to Fort Wingate, New Mexico to work with the Navajo as director of the Charles H. Burke School. In 1935 he was transferred to the Taos Day School. In 1936 Jackson retired from teaching and moved to Olympia, Washington where he worked for the State Department of Social Security. Jackson was the author of several published articles, monographs, and children's books of nursery rhymes, including The Peter Patter Book (1918) and Jolly Jinks Song Book (1922). He died in Pomona, California, in 1958. Milo Winter (1888 - 1956) was an American book illustrator, who created editions of Aesop's Fables, Arabian Nights, Alice in Wonderland, A Christmas Carol, Gulliver's Travels, Tanglewood Tales (1913), and others. Blanche Fisher Wright [Blanch Fisher Wright Laite, 1887-1971] and Milo Winter [1888-1956] (illustrator).

He ends by stating that he 'always has a copy of Debrett' in his house. TWO: Printed 9 x 10 cm slip of proof of Burrows' entry in Debrett, corrected and completed in his autograph. In fair condition, with glue from mount adhering to the reverse. In addition to various corrections, Burrows gives details of family members, his address and his club.

He played for Surrey, and was presumably around when his more illustrious colleagues were giving autographs. According to the report in The Times, the match ended in a draw.

"Mr. Gully ranks as one of the most accomplished artists New Zealand has produced" (Hocken). First English edition, first published in Dunedin, New Zealand, the same year. With an introduction and explanatory text by his friend and patron, the geologist, von Haast, who through "achievements and his encouragement, science in New Zealand came of age": "It is impossible, without having seen them, to form any adequate idea of the grandeur of those gigantic masses of rock, snow, and ice which abound in the wild and desolate region of these Southern Alps. It was the privilege of the writer to have been the first explorer and delineator of these regions, it is almost impossible to convey through a small number of pictures and adequate representation of the varied scenery of these beautiful islands, but those which Mr. Gully has selected for publication are well chosen, and are sufficiently striking and characteristic to give the lover of nature some idea of the infinite beauty of that land" (Introduction). While drawing master at Nelson College, in New Zealand, from 1861 to 1863, Gully he sketched in the Nelson Lakes area and painted local scenes. "More importantly, he produced 12 watercolour paintings of South Island mountains and glaciers from sketches by Julius Haast. This set of paintings was used to illustrate Haast's lecture on the mountains and glaciers of the Canterbury province, which was read to the Royal Geographical Society in London on 8 February 1864. Gully exhibited at the New Zealand Exhibition in Dunedin in 1865, showing work on behalf of the survey office and on his own account. He gained a silver medal and sold all the paintings he exhibited. This recognition placed his name at the forefront of New Zealand watercolourists. His reputation was further enhanced by his exhibits at the Nelson Institute Exhibition in February 1866. The paintings included scenes of the town of Nelson, the Kaikoura Mountains, Mt Cook (from sketches by John Rochfort), and the West Coast. Some of the paintings went on to the Intercolonial Exhibition of Australasia in Melbourne in 186667. Two paintings sold for £60 each and Gully made arrangements for agents to sell his work in Melbourne. He began an association with the Victoria Academy of Arts and was represented at many of its exhibitions. In 1873 he visited Victoria briefly and praised the people as his first real patrons. In 1865 there had been an unsuccessful attempt to publish a portfolio of his paintings of New Zealand. In 1877 the project finally came to fruition with the publication in Dunedin and London of New Zealand scenery. The 15 chromolithographs based on Gully's original watercolours were accompanied by descriptive text written by Haast. The plates depict prominent landmarks and scenes, from Mt Taranaki and Lake Taupo in the north to Bradshaw Sound in the south. A few words put to music follow, with a lighthearted quotation from the novel 'Valentine Vox': 'Mynheer Vandunk who never got drunk - sipped brandy & water gaily, "cold without", Railly!' He concludes: '"Cold Without & Warm within" Wishing you & yours all the enjoyment due at this festive demise of the old year 1863 & continued prosperity with the birth of the New Year 1864'. The words 'Business Bad' alone on reverse of second leaf. Letter Two: 4pp., 12mo. Bifolium. Diagonal section cut away from both leaves, with loss of text; otherwise good on lightly-aged paper. Addressed to 'My dear Old DD'. He begins by discussing 'a great big chesnut mare' which has been 'placed at my disposal for paying her keep': 'I don't know anything of her fencing qualities but shall find out in a day or so - al about it'. He is 'waiting till the end of the hunting season' before writing: 'I don't consider this a letter only an intermezzo or parenthesis'. He has been 'suffering from pains in the back (beginning with lumbago) & in the legs, to such an extent that I can scarcely walk erect - Whats the remedy? My Northern Esculapius - Eh?' He concludes: 'When are you coming to town? You'll miss all the parts if you don't come soon - We must! We shall! We Will! have one more run. And become gay. And become gay become gay to make our vitals good!!!' He ends with a few bars setting these final words to music, and signs 'T'.
