Over the course of many years MacDonald supported George Herman Ryland, Registrar of Montreal and former Clerk of the Executive Council for the Province of Lower Canada, in his efforts to obtain financial compensation from the government. Ryland's claim was based on a promise made to him by Lord Sydenham, the first Governor-General of the United Province of Canada (1841). At the time of this letter Macdonald held the portfolio of Minister of Justice and was in the second year of his first term as Prime Minister.…

His son, the 9th Duke, best known as Marquess of Lorne, was Governor-General of Canada from 1878 to 1883.…
