Both items in good condition, lightly aged, and each with thin strip of paper from mount adhering to reverse. ONE: Great Malvern; 19 December. 2pp, 12mo. Now that he has returned to Malvern, having been 'on a visit to Mr W. Whitman', he thanks Churchill for his 'kindness which I may say, I never found at fault'. He continues: 'T…hough away from Malvern I have not been idle: most of the neighbouring gentry came to Dudmaston to consult me'. Regarding the future Earl of Ellesmere (1800-1857) he continues: 'Lord Francis Egerton is in correspondence with me & tells me some queer tales about the manner in which doctors & laymen are hammering at him to fright him from the Water Curer. But he says he shall judge for himself, & doing so, he sees nothing to prevent his commencing it here in January, except the times: to [adapt?] which he thinks is difficult. He will come, however, I have no doubt. He brings all his family with him.' He is glad that Churchill has 'at length fixed on a suburban residence', which will be of benefit to him and his family regardless of the expence. He ends with a question regarding the identity of 'Mackensie'. TWO: Malvern; 6 August. 1p, 12mo. He is enclosing a 'statement touching a very desirable position for a surgeon of good abilities & good manners. The locality of the engagement is in the North Riding & the lady who has the appointment is a patient of mine.' He asks him to 'communicate this to any eligible man who should desire such a thing'. With a postscript concluding that the successful applicant 'will have chiefly to practise in the old way'. From the distinguished autograph collection of the psychiatrist Richard Alfred Hunter (1923-1981), whose collection of 7000 works relating to psychiatry is now in Cambridge University Library. Hunter and his mother Ida Macalpine had a particular interest in the illness of King George III, and their book 'George III and the Mad Business' (1969) suggested the diagnosis of porphyria popularised by Alan Bennett in his play 'The Madness of George III'.

All three with thin strip of paper from mount adhering to one e…dge. ONE: 23 July 1842. 1p, 12mo. In fair condition, lightly aged, with slight damp stain to one corner. Chrichton begins by asking to be sent 'the two bound Copies of my work to the Bolt and Tun Fleet St. before three oCl on the day you receive this viz. Monday'. He asks him to 'add up the parcel' to him at Sevenoaks, giving details of the coach from that place to be used. He also asks to be sent 'copies of any periodical in which my Commentaries are reviewed or commented on, whether favorably or the reverse'. The letter concludes: 'If you hear any remarks on the work by the medical men who frequent your library perhaps you will be kind enough to communicate them.' TWO: 20 August 1842. 1p, 4to. In good condition, lightly aged. Bifolium, addressed on reverse of second leaf, with postmark, to 'Mr Churchill | Bookseller | Wardour St | Soho | London'. In good condition. Folded four times. Before writing to his friend 'Professor Chelius [Maximilian Joseph von Chelius (1794-1876)] of Heidelberg' he is 'desirous of knowing if the copy of my Commentaries which I addressed to him has been forwarded, and when it left London'. He asks 'to what German bookseller or other person it was sent in order to be handed to him'. He concludes in the hope that 'the copy for the R[oya]l Soc[iet]y of Sciences at Gottingen has also been despatched'. THREE: 13 June 1850. 3pp, 12mo. Bifolium. In good condition, lightly aged. Begins: 'Sir | A bookseller in Bath made me believe that he could sell the remaining copies of my Commentaries and accordingly I ordered Palmer (the printer) to send them to him. The unfortunate Speculator died soon after, and his Stock in trade was bought by a Mr Jennings who writes the accompanying letter to me.' He will ask Jennings to forward 'the parcel or package' to Churchill, 'but not in the hope that you can dispose of them at the price you first put on them, nor in fact, at almost any reasonable price'. He suggests a price for 'selling them to the trade' at which he will be satisfied, otherwise asking what to do with them. The letter concludes: 'My old age and its infirmities prevent me from coming to London and therefore I must ask you to favor me with your advice as soon as convenient to you.' From the distinguished autograph collection of the psychiatrist Richard Alfred Hunter (1923-1981), whose collection of 7000 works relating to psychiatry is now in Cambridge University Library. Hunter and his mother Ida Macalpine had a particular interest in the illness of King George III, and their book 'George III and the Mad Business' (1969) suggested the diagnosis of porphyria popularised by Alan Bennett in his play 'The Madness of George III'.

Oxford, printed and published by A.R. Mowbray at his office in Saint Aldate's Street, 1869, in-4°, 29,5 x 25 cm, 33 unpaginated leaves, printed in Gothic type, all with a double red typographical fillet border. Bound in full bleached vellum , richly decorated with gilt and thick red fillets which surround a large losenge with gi…lt initials in the centre (LSU ?). The central losenge is surrounded by small losenges filled with stylized gilt lilies, all edges gilt, pastedown and flyleaves in cream coloured watery silk, smooth spine with decorated gilt lilies within a thick red fillet. This is a unique illuminated copy. 33 pages (out of 64) have been illuminated by a professional hand in the mediaeval style; 3 full page hand painted miniatures (of which the Cannon plate); 4 nearly full-page initials; 5 manuscript titles with initials; 21 pages with large full page ornamental borders. Some miniatures are heightened with gold (sometimes with oxidation). The high quality of the illumination might lead us to the supposition that this copy was in fact a design example which had to serve for a printed chromolithography edition, possibly in another size. We could not verify if A.R. Mowbry ever entertained such a project. If not it remains an interesting question who the artist was. Alfred Mowbray founded in 1858 in Oxford a bookshop specialised in religious books. A London branch was opened in 1873. In 2006 the business moved to Hatchards on Piccadilly.
