It was created by Grandville in in 1839-1840. This work is a political caricature which represents a groupof romantic writers colliding with the closed doors of the French Academy.This image symbolizes the ostracism that the Romantics suffered from the Academy,who repeatedly rejected their applications. According to Gérard Pouchain, specialist incaricatures of Victor Hugo, the complete suite of 5 lithographs is very rare. Descriptions of the first 3 prints:1) The first print shows on the left, Alfred de Vigny beckoning at the door of the Académie française, behind him is Eugène Sue riding on a litter of books carried on the shoulders of several men and a woman who are characters from his novel "Mysteries of Paris", as is a woman, identified as Ste. Fleur-de-Marie, standing behind him, holding a large quill pen, at center is Alexandre Dumas shying away from the ghosts of "Caligula" and "Laird de Dumbicky", and on the right, Honore de Balzac is riding the hair-braids of two women among a small group of women and a couple of men, some are holding a platter of heart-shaped candles over his head giving the appearance of a crown, on the ground below him are hearts with keys in them. Of the four, only Alfred de Vigny was eventually elected to the Académie française.2) .La pl. du n° De Vinck 13376 avec des modifications : le groupe de dr. (des n.os 9 a? 13, devenus ici 3 et 4) est le même mais le groupe de g. est différent : Victor Hugo est remplacé par Eugène Sue entouré des principaux personnages de ses romans, qui ont, eux mêmes, prit la place de Napoléon Crevel de Charlemagne et des "enfants de choeur" de Victor Hugo. The prints feature caricatures of groups of authors including Alexandre Dumas, Victor Hugo, Jules Janin, and Eugène Sue, and one female author, Marguerite-Louise-Virginie Ancelot, depicted in humorous poses outside the doors of the academy and inside the Chambre des Perruques Académiques. The prints were issued in La Caricature Provisoire (nos. 59, 61, and new series no. 7) between December 1839 and February 1840.Un des travaux les plus connus de Grandville est "La Grande Course au Clocher Académique" réalisée en 1839. Cette oeuvre est une caricature politique qui représente un groupe d'écrivains romantiques se heurtant aux portes closes de l'Académie française. Centered on the Seine, this map depicts embastilled Paris as contained by the Thiers Wall as well as its immediate vic…inity, including the Bois de Boulogne and Bois de Vincennes. Gardens, monuments, and parks are illustrated either in profile or in the form of vignette engravings making this an ideal companion for the curious traveler. Trains are delightfully drawn entering and leaving the city in four locations. Predating Haussmann's Renovations The 'Haussmannization' of Paris would not begin for nearly another decade, meaning that the warren of small streets that were an integral part of 17th, 18th, and early 19th century Paris still existed. The Arc de Triomphe, l'Avenue des Champs-Elysées, and the Jardin des Tuileries (Tuileries Garden) are all as they appear in Paris today, but the Louvre is different. In 1844, the Palais des Tuileries still stood (until 1871), blocking public access to the Palais du Louvre. The Fortification of Paris This map exhibits the Theirs Wall shortly after it was completed in 1844. Shocked by the seizure of Paris by foreign enemies during the 1814 Battle of Paris, the French King at the time, Louis-Philippe (1773 - 1850), conceived of a broad network of walls and forts he believed would make Paris impregnable. The project was met with immediate opposition, some of which claimed that the walls were not defensive, but rather intended to control Parisians in the event of an anti-monarchal rebellion. Nonetheless, under a plan prepared by Marshal General Jean-de-Dieu Soult (1759 - 1861), construction began in 1841. The completed fortifications, named the Thiers Wall after the French Prime Minister at the time, Adolphe Theirs (1797 - 1877), were, at enormous expense, completed in 1844. The walls were thirty-three kilometers long and consisted of ninety-four bastions, seventeen gates, twenty-three minor road crossings, and eight railroad gates. By 1919, advancements in military technology made the walls obsolete, leading them to be fully deconstructed by 1929 and replaced with the Boulevard Périphérique. Publication History and Census This map was published in many editions and variants from about 1845. Some attribute the engraving work to Alexandre Amié Vuillemin, and it is indeed in his style, but the present map is unattributed. The 1846 edition appears at the BNF, but we have been unable to locate another 1847 in institutional collections. We are aware of one other in private hands. A beautiful 1847 illustrated pictorial map of Paris, France, by Charles Fatout. Centered on the Seine, this map covers embastilled Paris as contained by the Thiers Wall as well as its immed…iate vicinity, including the Bois de Boulogne and Bois de Vincennes. Gardens, monuments, and parks are illustrated either in profile or in the form of vignette engravings making this an ideal companion for the curious tourist. Trains are delightfully drawn entering and leaving the city in four locations. Predating Hausmann's Renovations The 'Haussmannization' of Paris would not begin for nearly another decade, meaning that the warren of small streets that were an integral part of 17th, 18th, and early 19th century Paris still existed. The Arc de Triomphe, l'Avenue des Champs-Elysées and the Jardin des Tuileries (Tuileries Garden) are all as they appear in Paris today, but the Louvre is different. In 1844, the Palais des Tuileries still stood (until 1871), blocking public access to the Palais du Louvre.
