Charles John Vaughan (16 August 1816 - 15 October 1897), was an English scholar and Anglican churchman. He was born in Leicester, the second son of the Revd Edward Thomas Vaugh…an, vicar of St Martin's, Leicester. He was educated at Rugby School and Cambridge, where he was bracketed senior classic with Lord Lyttelton in 1838. In 1839 he was elected fellow of Trinity College, Cambridge, and for a short time studied law. He took orders in 1841, and became vicar of St Martin's, Leicester. Three years later he was elected headmaster of Harrow School. He resigned the headship in 1859 and accepted the bishopric of Rochester, but afterwards withdrew his acceptance. In 1860 he was appointed vicar of Doncaster. He was appointed Master of the Temple in 1869, and Dean of Llandaff in 1879, a post he held until his death. In 1894 he was elected president of University College, Cardiff, in recognition of the prominent part he took in its foundation.

Dr. Christopher Newman Hall LLB (22 May 1816 - 18 February 1902), born at Maidstone and known in later life as a 'Dissenter's Bishop', was one of the most celebrated nin…eteenth century English Nonconformist divines. He was active in social causes; supporting Abraham Lincoln and abolition of slavery during the American Civil War, the Chartist cause, and arranging for influential Nonconformists to meet Gladstone. Come to Jesus, first published in 1848 also contributed to his becoming a household name throughout Britain, the USA and further afield - by the end of the century the book had been translated into about forty languages and sold four million copies worldwide.

Monsignor Thomas John Capel (born 28 October 1836, Ireland - died 23 October 1911, Sacramento, California) was a Roman Ca…tholic priest, elevated to Monsignor. Born in either Waterford or Ardmore in Ireland, by 1881 he gives his place of birth as Ramsgate in Kent;[2] this was either done for social reasons or represents a genuine error. His father John Capel was a Chief Boatman with the Coast Guard. In 1854 he helped to establish St Mary's Training College in Hammersmith and became its vice-principal where he remained until 1858 when ill health forced him to resign and go to France to recover. While in France he established the English Catholic Mission at Pau.

Sir Henry Morton Stanley GCB (born John Rowlands; 28 January 1841 - 10 May 1904) was a Welsh journalist and explorer who was famo…us for his exploration of central Africa and his search for missionary and explorer David Livingstone. Upon finding Livingstone, Stanley reportedly asked, "Dr. Livingstone, I presume?" Stanley is also known for his search for the source of the Nile, his pioneering work later enabling the plundering of the Congo Basin region by King Leopold II of Belgium, and his command of the Emin Pasha Relief Expedition. He was knighted in 1899.

Arthur Penrhyn Stanley, FRS (13 December 1815 - 18 July 1881), known as Dean Stanley, was an English churchman and academic. He was Dean of Westminster from 1864 to 1881. Hi…s position was that of a Broad Churchman and he was the author of a number of works on Church History. Stanley was born in Alderley Edge in Cheshire, where his father Edward Stanley, later Bishop of Norwich, was then rector. A brother was Owen Stanley and his sister Mary Stanley. The middle-name 'Penrhyn' suggests Welsh lineage.

Manuscript in brown ink with calligraphic title in blue and decoration in black, yellow and magenta inks, 230 x 185 mm (sheet); written entirely in the hand of criminally insane inmate James Hadfield, and signed by him in full at the foot, followed by 'Bethlem Hospital' in sanguine ink; m…ounted recto of a nineteenth-century album page, inscribed in another hand in the upper margin: 'This was given to me by Hadfield himself at Bethlem Hospital. Hadfield had shot at George the Third.'; very well preserved. Autograph manuscript poem by James Hadfield, would-be assassin of George III, written in Bethlem Hospital, London, and obtained directly from him by a hospital visitor. James Hadfield (1771/2-1841) was a soldier who in 1793 had received severe head wounds and been taken prisoner by the French at the Battle of Lincelles. After his return to England he was discharged from the army and granted a small pension on the grounds of insanity. He began to suffer religious delusions and became convinced that his being executed by the British government would lead to the Second Coming of Christ. To that end, he made an (unsuccessful) attempt to assassinate George III by firing a pistol at the royal box in the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane, on 15 May 1800. He was charged with high treason, but acquitted of attempted murder by reason of insanity after a brilliant legal defense by a leading barrister of the day, Thomas Erskine. However, the trial directly resulted in the passing of the Criminal Lunatics Act, which was retrospectively applied to Hadfield's case with immediate effect. This ensured that he could be detained at His Majesty's pleasure, since he was now classified as a potentially dangerous 'criminal lunatic' who posed a threat to public safety. The case was a landmark one for its impact on the way mental health issues are treated in criminal law. Hadfield was initially incarcerated in London's Bethlem Hospital (aka Bedlam); then, following an escape and brief period on the run in 1802, he was next held in Newgate Prison up until 1816; finally, he was moved to the new Bedlam at St George?s Fields, where he remained until his death from tuberculosis on 23 January 1841. At St George's Fields, where he was housed in one of two purpose-built wings for the criminally insane, he was allowed to keep pets, including cats and dogs, as well as birds and squirrels. Hospital records inform us that for the vast majority of his time as an inmate, Hadfield was perfectly lucid and compliant, and his general behaviour was observed to be for the most part indistinguishable from that of any sane person - apart from his tendency to produce eccentric poetry. A number of Hadfield's own manuscript versions of his poem Epitaph of my poor Jack, Squirrel have survived, including several in the Bethlem Hospital collection. He was allowed to sell his manuscripts - of this, and other poems he had penned - to visitors to the hospital, where he was something of a celebrity, and he apparently used his meagre earnings to buy tobacco. Sometimes Hadfield would illustrate his poems, but every one of his manuscripts that has survived is unique in a particular way.
