See his entry in the Oxford DNB. 3pp, 12mo. Bivolium. In good condition, lightly aged. Folded twice. Addressed to 'Dear Friend' and signed 'Thos. Thomson.' Begins: 'Having a few moments to spare, I take the opportunity of writing to you. I am sincerely sorry I shall not be back in time to see you before you leave for school, it would have afforded me much pleasure to have cemented our friendship more firmly.' He likes the medical profession 'better than any other', and there is 'every probability' of his joining it. He would like to know the recipient's opinion. He finds Edinburgh 'a splendid city'. He ends by urging him to write soon.…

Very good. Minor wear and verso repair along original centerfold. Original platemark visible. Overall toning and foxing at places. Size 20 x 25 Inches. This is a beautiful 1817 map of Belgium and Luxembourg by the Edinburgh cartographer John Thomson. The title 'The Netherlands' refers to the old name for Belgium, also called Royal Netherlands and Catholic Netherlands. Covers the region from Dutch Flanders to Germany. This highly detailed map notes several cities, rivers, roads and other physical and political features. Forests are beautifully rendered in profile. An index in the top right quadrant lists the 13 departments of the First French Republic color-coded in the map. In 1830 Belgian Revolution would create the modern Belgian state. Luxembourg would be considered a province of the new Belgian state. The Netherlands however, would refuse to recognize the new country of Belgium until the 1839 Treaty of London. This Treaty would also grant Luxembourg the status of Grand Duchy, while its western portion would be ceded to Belgium as a province. In 1842, the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg would become part of the German Customs Union. This map was prepared by John Thomson for inclusion in the 1817 edition of Thomson's New General Atlas . Very good. Minor wear along original centerfold. Original platemark visible. Overall toning and foxing at places. Size 25.5 x 20.5 Inches. This is a beautiful 1817 Thomson map of Peru, Chile and Argentina. It covers Bolivia, Paraguay, Uruguay and parts of Peru, Chile, Argentina and Brazil. The map identifies towns, rivers, mountains, indigenous groups, and other political and physical features. Names important mountains in the Andes, including Aconcagua, the largest mountain in South America. In 1821, Peru was proclaimed independent. Antonio Jose de Sucre, a Venezuelan independence leader and one of Simon Bolivar's closest friends, was given an option of either unite with the United Provinces of Rio de la Plata, stay under the newly formed Republic of Peru, or create and new nation. He chose the latter. Chile, during this time, was undergoing political upheaval and headed for civil war. After the last of the Spanish troops surrendered in 1826 and after the failure of the federalist system in 1828, Chile adopted a moderately liberal constitution. This in turn alienated both the liberal and federalist factions and would ultimately lead to the revolution in 1829 followed by 30 years of conservative governments. This map was prepared by John Thomson for inclusion in the 1817 edition of Thomson's New General Atlas . References: Rumsey 1007.077.…

1st Edition. Good. Creasing along centerfold and two vertical lines to the right of centerfold towards top. Light foxing towards top. Offsetting throughout. Some wear and uneven trimming along edge. Size 20 x 23.5 Inches. A lovely example of John Thomson's 1817 map of remote British islands, including the Isles of Wight, Man, and Jersey, with views of the Eddystone Lighthouse and Freshwater Bay on the Isle of Wight. A Closer Look The sheet is composed of five maps with hand colored outlines and two views. The maps, moving clockwise from top-left, depict the islands of the Bailiwick of Guernsey in the English Channel (the Isles of Guernsey, Herm, Sark, and Alderney), Jersey, the Isles of Scilly (off the far southwestern coast of England near Cornwall), the Isle of Wight, and the Isle of Man (here as 'Mann'). Each of the maps is oriented roughly towards the north and notes towns and villages, roads, forests, areas of elevation, and coastal features such as banks and hazards. At center, illustrations provide views of the Eddystone Lighthouse and of Freshwater Bay off the Isle of Wight. The Eddystone Lighthouse seen here was the third of four lighthouses at that location, dating back to 1698; the original was likely the first ever offshore lighthouse. The late 18th and 19th century brought significant change to many of the islands depicted here. Fears of French invasion - including an actual invasion of Jersey in 1781 - caused the British government to heavily fortify several of them. Meanwhile, technological improvements brought more travelers and migrants from the British mainland, altering (Anglicizing) the often deeply idiosyncratic local cultures. Publication History and Census The maps and views on this sheet were engraved by Nathaniel Rogers Hewitt for inclusion in the first edition (1817) of John Thomson's New General Atlas . It is not independently cataloged among the holdings of any institution aside from the David Rumsey Historical Map Collection, while Thomson's entire atlas is more widely distributed in institutional collections. A later edition of the sheet (1829) is independently cataloged among the holdings of the Newberry Library and the Wisconsin Historical Society (OCLC 607920871). References: Rumsey 1007.014. …

1st Edition. Very good. Even toning. Some discoloration along fold line. Noticeable offsetting. Size 19.25 x 23.5 Inches. A handsome 1817 map of the Mediterranean Sea produced for John Thomson's New General Atlas . It provides abundant information on the coasts and some of the main ports in the sea 'at the center of the world'. A Closer Look The sheet consists of a central map and seven insets, depicting, clockwise from top-left, the bay or harbors of Marseilles, Genoa, Gibraltar, Smyrna, Algiers, Algeciras, and Livorno. Banks, hazards, islets, and many coastal settlements are noted on the main map, while soundings, currents, and anchorages are provided in the insets. The insets also indicate important landward features for mariners, such as lighthouses, forts, and 'watering places'. Unlike most Thomson maps, this map includes considerable navigational data, including depth soundings. White not practical for navigation, the presence inclusion of such data underscores the Mediterranean's significance to European commerce, as well as its central role in the just-ended Napoleonic Wars. Publication History and Census This map was engraved in 1817 by Samuel John Neele for inclusion in the first edition of John Thomson's New General Atlas . It is not independently cataloged among the holdings of any institution aside from the David Rumsey Historical Map Collection, while Thomson's entire atlas is more widely distributed in institutional collections. This is a beautiful example of John Thomson's 1817 map of Egypt and Abyssinia. Essentially two maps on a single sheet, the map on the left represents Egypt while the right hand side of the sheet features a map of Abyssinia. The map of Egypt covers from the Nile Delta southward following the Nile River as far as Esna. Names numerous settlement s and villages along the course of the river, including a number of temples and ancient Egyptian ruins. Also identifies several caravan routes. The map of Abyssinia covers modern day Ethiopia from the Red Sea east to the Lake Tana. Caravan routes and other tracks are noted throughout. Thomson also includes several descriptive notes. This is an attractive 1817 map of the Balkans by the Edinburgh cartographer John Thomson. It depicts the region from modern day Slovenia east to the Black Sea and from Moldova south to include Bulgaria. The map also notes the ancient Roman regions of Illyricum, Dacia and Moesia. Throughout, the map notes both contemporary and ancient place names. Also notes rivers, mountains and other topographical features. Following the Battle of Corinth in 146 BC, the Greek peninsula came under Roman rule. The period from 31 BC and AD 180 in Greek history is described as the era of the Pax Romana. This was a period of peace and security when many Greek cities flourished, leading to cultural and economic progress. The classical period in Greek history, which lasted from the 5th century B.C. through the 4th century B.C. greatly influenced the Roman Empire's politics, art, architecture, philosophy and literature. After the fall of the Western Roman Empire, Greece became the center of the Eastern Roman or Byzantium Empire. Thomson's work, including this map, represents some of the finest cartographic art of the 19th century. His maps are known for their stunning color, awe-inspiring size, and magnificent detail. Very good. Minor wear along original centerfold. Minor toning and spotting. Narrow top margin. Size 21 x 25.5 Inches. This is an attractive 1817 map of Greece, the Balkans and Ukraine by the Edinburgh cartographer John Thomson. It depicts the region from Greece north to include the southern portions of Ukraine, including Crimea. Includes the whole or part of the modern day nations of Greece, Albania, Macedonia, Bulgaria, Romania, Moldova, Serbia and Hungary. Rivers, mountains and other topographical features are noted. As the title suggest, this map was issued to depict the territories as set by the Congress of Vienna in 1815. The regions are color coded with an explanation of the colors included in the lower right quadrant of the map. Following the defeat of Napoleonic France, the conference in Vienna set to resize the main powers so they could balance each other off and remain at peace. Europe under a new peaceful balance of power was centered on the five most important powers (also referred to as the five 'Great Powers') of the United Kingdom, France, Russia, Prussia and the Austrian empire. Alas, the 'peace' was but an illusion and Europe was anything but calm. Old rivalries would fester and soon nationalism, liberalism, revolution (industrial and otherwise) would once again be on the rise across Europe. This map is a part of a Thomson's larger 4 map set of Europe. Thomson's work, including this map, represents some of the finest cartographic art of the 19th century. His maps are known for their stunning color, awe-inspiring size, and magnificent detail. This map was prepared by John Thomson for inclusion in the 1817 edition of his New General Atlas . 1st Edition. Good. Original centerfold exhibits some toning. Size 21 x 26 Inches. This is John Thomson's 1816 map of the Polynesia and the South Pacific. It is one of the few early 19th century maps to focus on Polynesia, despite, in the wake of Cook's travels (and gruesome death), the area being heavily romanticized as an savage paradise in the minds of the British public. A Closer Look With a focus on the areas between the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn, the map embraces the South Pacific from Eastern Australia to (roughly) the Marquesas and from Hawaii to just north of New Zealand. There are insets of the big island of Hawaii (Owhyhee) and Kealakekua Bay (Karakakooa Bay - where Cook was killed), as well as of Tahiti (Otaheite) with Matavai Bay (Matavia Bay - where Cook observed the 1769 Transit of Venus). Publication History and Census This map was prepared and engraved in 1817 in Edinburgh by Samuel John Neele for inclusion in the 1817 first edition of John Thomson's New General Atlas . This fascinating hand colored 1817 map by Edinburgh cartographer John Thomson depicts the Milanese States of northern Italy. These include Milan, Alto Po and Mantua. Bounded on the south by Parma and on the west by Piedmont. This area is depicted in impressive detail including roads, rivers, cities, lakes and mountains noted throughout. One of the most attractive maps of Milan, Mantua and Alto Po appearing in the early 19th century. Very good. Some centerfold discoloration. Size 23.5 x 19.5 Inches. An impressive 1815 John Thomson map of the European part of the Russian Empire, beautifully engraved by Moffat. It was produced in the wake of the Napoleonic Wars and the Congress of Vienna, where Russia announced itself as one of the major players in Europe and the political map of Europe was remade. A Closer Look Ranging from the Baltic states (then controlled by Russia), Prussia, Poland (what remained of it), Romania, and Moldovia to the Urals, this map takes in the European portion of the Russian Empire. Much of this territory had been conquered by the Russian state in the preceding 150 years, particularly under Peter the Great and Catherine the Great. Lovely hand-coloring distinguishes governorates of the Russian Empire. Towns and cities are noted throughout, including in neighboring territories beyond the empire's borders. Mountains, rivers, lakes, forests, and other geographical features are also indicated. Text provides further explanation, especially along Russia's frontier, such as south of the River Don, below and to the left of the title. Historical Context In 1815, Russia was in a commanding position in eastern Europe. Due to its critical role in defeating Napoleon, the Russians could make ambitious demands at the Congress of Vienna. But pushback from other victorious nations led to a delicate balance of power and a carving up of territory (i.e. Poland) between Prussia, Austria, and Russia. With the path to further inroads into central Europe seemingly blocked, and in order to shore up Russia's economic and fiscal position, the Tsars began an aggressive series of expansions into the Caucuses and Central Asia that would vastly increase the landmass of the Russian Empire. Publication History and Census This map was engraved in 1815 by J. Moffat in Edinburgh for the 1817 edition of Thomson's New General Atlas . It differs from most other maps in the atlas, which list John Menzies or Samuel John Neele as engraver. The individual listed here appears distinct from James Moffat, another Scottish engraver from Edinburgh, who spent most of his life in India and was known for his prints of daily life in Calcutta. This map is superficially very similar to one of the same title and intended for the same publication, but dated November 30, 1815 (previously sold by us) instead of July 21, 1815. Due to the use of the same hand-coloring scheme to distinguish territories, the two appear identical at a glance, but a closer examination reveals important differences. To begin with, the later map was engraved by Neele instead of Moffat. Also, the present map is numbered 33 at top-left, while the Neele engraving is unnumbered. Neele removed Moffat's illustrations of forests and reworked his mountains to make them less prominent. He also added roads, instituted a system of illustrations for settlements to indicate their size and function, and made some changes to update territories and geographical features. In other words, it was a map that emphasized information and functionality, while the present map leaned more towards aesthetics. The similarity of these two maps and their both being dated 1815 complicates any census. The OCLC notes the map being cataloged at twelve institutions, but it is likely that most of those are from the issue of the atlas with Neele's engraving. References: Rumsey 1007.034. 1st Edition. Very good. Original centerfold. Size 19 x 22 Inches. This is John Thomson's fascinating 1814 map of Africa, here in its first edition. This map is as engrossing as much for what it doesn't show as for what it does. The expansive blank interior, here labeled, 'unknown parts' reveals just how little of the 'Dark Continent' was known in the early 19th century. A Closer Look On this map exploration is limited to the Nile Valley, the costal Mediterranean lands, Abyssinia, the Niger Valley, the Congo, South Africa, and the Mozambique Coast. A large and fictive mountain range, alternately labeled the Mountains of Kong or the Mountain of the Moon, stretches across the continent. This range is a combination of Ptolemaic conventions on the source of the White Nile, as well the speculations of Mungo Park on the sources of the Niger. Further south Lake Malawi (l. Maravi) appears in embryonic form, most likely gleaned from indigenous reports, and is suggestive of the great lakes of the Rift Valley. Caravan Routes Caravan routes crisscross the Sahara, alternatively labeled 'Great Desert'. Some of these routes are given exotic names such as 'Desert of 20 Journies' referring to the number of days it takes to cross that expanse. In addition, several late 18th and early 19th century exploratory routes are identified. Publication History and Census This map was prepared and engraved in c. 1816 in Edinburgh by J. and G. Menzies for inclusion in the 1817 first edition of John Thomson's New General Atlas . References: Rumsey 1007.051. Tooley, R.V., Maps of Africa, p. 101.…

Very good. Minor wear along original centerfold. Original platemark visible. Overall toning and foxing at places. Size 24 x 21 Inches. This unusual hand-colored 1817 map by John Thomson is essentially two maps in one: North Africa and South Africa. Thomson's decision to focus on these two parts of Africa may seem unusual until one realizes that these were in fact the only relatively well known parts of the 'dark continent.' Northern Africa, particularly the Nile Valley and the Mediterranean Coast had long been visited by European merchants and travelers while, beyond the Sahara, the Niger River system had recently been explorer by the adventurers Mungo Park, Brown and others. Nonetheless speculation remained regarding he sources and course of the Niger, especially in the East, where a speculative river path leas south east from a proto-Lake Chad (Wancara or Ungara) through a speculative mountain range, the Mountains of the Moon or the Mountains of Kong. Park, and others postulated the existence of the Mountains of Kong stretching across central Africa in an attempt to explain the Niger. Further north, caravan routes crisscross the Sahara. Southern Africa, a more pleasing climate to the Europeans, was in the meantime actively and aggressively being colonized by the Dutch and the English. Here, the region is divided into various provinces including the recently acquired British Cape District and Zwellingdam, and the Dutch / Afrikaans Territories of Stellenbosch and Graaff Reyn. Numerous transcontinental routes are identified, as are areas commendable to settlement, pasturage, and development. Of particular note is the route of John Campbell, an English Missionary through Zwellingdam. Campbell was commissioned to reconnaissance the area and provide a detailed report on the territory's country, settlements, and people. His report was highly regarded in its time and provided some of the best information about South Africa available in England. The whole is beautifully engraved in the minimalist English style pioneered in the early part of the 19th century. Thomson maps are known for their stunning color, awe-inspiring size, and magnificent detail. Thomson's work, including this map, represents some of the finest cartographic art of the 19th century. Relief is shown by hachure with towns, cities, and major topographical features identified. This map was prepared by John Thomson for inclusion in the 1817 edition of Thomson's New General Atlas . Very good. Set of two maps. Minor wear and verso repair along original centerfolds. Original platemarks visible. Foxing and toning at places. Size refers to the composite of two map. Individual maps are 22 x 25 in. Size 41 x 25 Inches. This is a stunning set of two 1817 maps of India and Nepal by Edinburgh cartographer John Thomson. As a whole, the maps illustrate India when the British East India Company had expanded their control - here in pink - from coast to coast. Color coding, with a key on the lower sheet, defines spheres of influence, including both British allies and enemies. Upper Map The upper map depicts northern India and Nepal bounded on the east by Persia and the Indus valley, on the North by Tibet, on the south by Berar, and on the east by Assam and Bhutan. At top there is a large inset of the Kingdom of Nepal and a smaller inset of the vicinity of Kabul. This area is depicted in impressive detail considering that, when this map was printed very few western travelers had ever been to Nepal. Includes roads, mountain passes and the residences of important Lamas. Extends fully into the Tibetan plateau as far as Te Shoo Loomboo and the Road to Lhasa (Lassa). The second map (image bottom) covers southern India from Bombay to northern Ceylon. Many of these areas were at war with the British when this map went to press. Publication History and Census This map was published by John Thomson for the 1817 Baldwin, Cradock, and Joy edition of John Thomson's New General Atlas . The maps were engraved by Samuel John Neele. 1st Edition. Good. Some older reinforcements to centerfold and margins. Size 24.75 x 20 Inches. A scarce first edition example of John Thomson's 1817 map of the northeastern parts of the United States, including New York, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Maryland, Rhode Island, and parts of adjacent Virginia, Canada, and the Great Lakes. There appears a large inset of Niagara Falls along the top border. Historical Context This map was engraved just 2 years after the end of the War of 1812 (1812 - 1815), a time when British interest in the United States was still running high. The map includes much of cartographic interest - including New York's Colonial Era Claims to southern Vermont. It also notes Maine as the 'District of Main'. At the time, it was still a dependency of Massachusetts - a situation that did not change until 1819, when the Massachusetts legislature separated it off, and 1820, when it became a state. The 'Connecticut Western Reserve' is noted in northeastern Ohio - this was a legacy territory granted to Connecticut by Royal Charter under King Charles II. Connecticut relinquished its claims to the Western Reserve to the Connecticut Land Company between 1796 and 1800. Nonetheless, the legacy of the Reserve remained, and it appeared on maps well into the 1820s. Publication History and Census This map was engraved by Nathaniel Rogers Hewitt for the 1817 first edition of John Thomson's New General Atlas . This map was discontinued in several subsequent editions but updated and reintroduced in the 1827 edition. Examples of this early edition are consequently quite scarce. References: OCLC 62277838.…
