In an impressive description of their joint achievements, the entry on Gilbert describes his association with Lawes as 'one of the longest and most productive scientific partnerships on record [.] In agricultural circles their names are for ever linked'. The first two items are i…n uniform light-blue printed card covers; the last is of similar appearance, in printed card covers of the same colour. In good condition, lightly aged. The first two items (joint works by the two men) were formerly glued together, and their separation has caused minor damage to the covers. The first item (by Lawes alone) is presented by the authors, and the recipient was clearly knowledgeable in the field, as the first and last carry detailed annotations in pencil, with further notes on a separate leaf loosely inserted in the first. The authors are named on the titles as 'J. B. Lawes, F.R.S., F.C.S.' and 'J. H. Gilbert, Ph.D., F.R.S., F.C.S.' ONE: [By both men.] 'Report of Experiments on the Growth of Wheat for Twenty Years in succession on the same Land.' Offprint: 'From the Journal of the Royal Agricultural Society of England, Vol. XXIV. Parts I. & II.' 109 + xli pp, 8vo. In manuscript at head of front cover: 'With compliments, from the Authors. Appendix of 26 tables, one a fold-out. Another fold-out table, in colours, in body of text. six of the final pages of which carry knowledgeable annotations in pencil in the margins, with another 12mo page of notes on a loosely-inserted leaf. TWO: [By both men.] 'The Effect of Different Manures on the Mixed Herbage of Grass-Land.' Offprint: 'From the Journal of the Royal Agricultural Society of England, Vol. XXIV., Part I.' 36pp, plus one fold-out plate at end. THREE: [By Lawes alone.] 'On the Chemistry of the Feeding of Animals for the Production of Meat and Manure.' 'Read before the Royal Dublin Society, Thursday Evening, March 31, 1864.' 21pp, 8vo. Nine pages with pencil annotations in the same hand as those in Item One. No copies of any of the three items at the British Library. All three now scarce. Seven holdings listed of the first item on COPAC, only one (Lawes' own copy at Rothamstead Research) of the second; and three of the third (one at Rothamstead).
